Sigh... cam chain tensioner is noisy (i hope anyway)

it's a tapping/clicking noise on idle up to 4k revs ish, not constant, not rythmatic, bike also feels a bit more vibey than usual.

Truth be told, i'm worried as hell that i've messed up some valves or it's vibey from something being wrong or....

if it was a straight swap with the tensioner i'd do it myself, but obviously the cam chain is the most important part of the engine.

Any help very very much appreciated and karma shall be oozed out!

Does the noise go away when you pull the clutch in? I convinced myself the cct on my Hornet (?same engine?) was dead then i reaslised that these bikes have a really rattly clutch when running in neutral!

unfortunately no, there's a rustling noise from the clutch, it goes when the clutch is in, used to that :p but no, this is a definite loud clunk/tap

Is this the '97 CBR?

If so, then it might need some new guides too ... how many miles has it done??

You might what to try winding the adjuster out and letting it 'snap' back in just in case it has got a bit stuck and a wind out and back a few times frees it up Thumbs Up

IME a dodgy CCT makes a really loud rattle, like a chain being dragged over a frying pan at certain rpm where the chain oscillates too much Thumbs Down .

They can tap a bit at lower RPM but with mine there was a point where it rattled rediculously loudly. Where is the sound coming from, I think your bike is like mine and has the cam chain on the RHS, if so the sound should be coming from there.

If it is coming from the clutch side or top of the engine I'd suspect something else.

If theres a sound like a marble in a washing machine coming from the right hand side, its fucked. If not, its something else Laughing
