Help needed with house internet

Hi guys,

I live in a shared house and we are using a belkin N rated wireless internet thingy. I am the only one who uses the wireless as the other two guys plug directly into the router, unfortunately with the router set to transmit wireless it cuts the other guys net speed in half (down to about 4 meg).

They are insisting the I buy a cable and use the router the way they do, but the internet was fine until they bought a new router so i'm pretty reluctant to lay out money for something that isn't my fault.

Is there some sort of setting on a router that would give wireless internet priority over wired that I could switch off?

And have a click about. It is completely possible to run everything at full speed when connecting via wireless & wired. I'm currently connected wired and my flatmate is wireless and we both get 10meg

3 can use less than 2 depending on what their doing. Wireless should run at 54meg from the router to you, wired at 1Gb / 100Mb. Both of these are way higher than the in limiting factor of 8meg internet. The 8meg line way very well be slower during the peak time periods or if your computer is using the net, but i see no reason or capability for the router to slow the internet connection down by half just because someone has connected to the wireless. It would be like your car's power output halving when you turned on the radio.

Bazza if I had the money to donate to charity believe me I would but trust me I don't live in a shared house for the fun of it!

Not sure why wireless is causing the router to slow anyway, but we did a speed test on one of the wired pc's with the wireless setting off and it got 8 meg, as soon as the wireless was switched on, but before I had connected, it was getting 4 meg, and yet as soon as I connected I was still getting the full 8.

I've had a look through the router settings and I can't see anything that jumps out, but I'm not much of a computer wizz. Although I can set a password so they can't keep turning off the wireless

To be honest they can go screw them selves if they think I'm paying out for the cables and stuff, it was them who changed the router about it was working fine before then.

By the way, its shared as in 3 of us renting separately through a landlord, not just a bunch of mates renting a house, otherwise I would be a bit more open to getting wired sorted, but I was here before both of them and my contract with the landlord includes the wireless Internet which they have messed up. Childish maybe, but I think its fair unless they want to pay for the cables and stuff for me.

Not sure if this will make things any clearer, but this is a speed test I have just done.

I must be getting my numbers muddled, they are getting half what I am when wireless is switched on, whether or not anybody is connected to it. And they are getting twice that when wireless is switched off.

Reset the router back to factory defaults and then setup the wireless security again.

This will get rid of any tinkering that's been done.

Then try the speed tests again.

Perhaps someone has set QoS to prioritise wireless or something odd like that?

I suspect they have limited the wireless speed to 4mb, it is easily done.

Also, check that the wireless is secure and that some-one else isnt "borrowing" your inets.

I have no idea what our internet is that is all controled by mr. landlord.

Anyway, I awoke thismorning to find that they had cut the wireless again which obviously means I couldn't access the router settings

Trying very hard not to get angry with them at home but I can't see how it's fair that I get no internet just so they can have it slightly quicker.

If I switch the router off at the plug will it re-set it, giving me access to the wireless again?

No. You'll need to use the reset button at the back. This is often recessed so you'll need a paperclip or pin to press it in.

If you've got the make and model you'll be able to get the instruction manual from the maker's website for the correct procedure.

If you press reset you will not be able to access it by wireless untill you have had it connected via cable to setup wireless settings though.

If you have no cable i wouldn't press reset as it won't get you online anyway.

Also i'm not sure the mac address block will work with wired connections. I've found that it only applies to wireless on my routers. Which was a pain when i needed to block kids from the internet

I have torrents but they are all paused and all other web stuff closed when I do a speed test.

To be honest I get a pretty ridiculously quick download speed at silly times at night so I don't see it being a problem with the wireless side of the router.

If it wont give me web back I wont reset the router, just causes trouble for nothing!

Sort of sorted now anyway, a friend sorted me out a 15 meter cable for free, much better than the £35 that curry's wanted!

Still a pain in the arse having a cable draped all the way up the stairs and across the landing but its a solution for the time being anyway
