Ive gotten bored of beer now, dont get me wrong i like a good drop of ales and lager all round but i went ibiza as a family outing for a week and it was all inclusive, free beer and mixers so thought i'd give them a whirl.
I grew fond of black russians and pina coladas especially.
Anyone else like stuff like that or are you all man me ugh ugh. ____________________ Haz ER-5, innit! |

Were they actually decent strength?
Gave up on all the cocktails you got in Tenerife as they used all the usual tricks to give you the weakest drink possible - alcohol in the straw, around the rim etc.
Anyway, I like a well made vodka cocktail - usually when there's a company-tab behind the bar , though of course that does tend to end up quite messily! Revolutions have some very nicely made examples. |

Tried a Black Russian (drink ) and Long Island Iced Tea in the past just out of curiosity, and found them to taste quite nice.
More recently got in to Mojito's during a wedding reception, and I don't even remember leaving the party. The best bit about it is that if I had been ill, my mouth would have still tasted minty fresh!! LOL
TBH though I normally just stick to JD on the rocks, or a pint or three of Stella or Guiness ____________________ 1st bike (Sept'06 - May'10) : 1991 GPZ500S / Current bike (since Nov 2009) : 2003 Suzuki Bandit 600N

This was the most perfect cocktail I've had in a long, long time. Might have been the setting which is right in the centre of NY or the fact that it was a big zero birthday
.....who knows, but it's really very, very good and I would recommend!!
Renaissance Times Square - 2 Times Square Martini
"A Cocktail Created at the Crossroads of the World... Times Square"
2oz Absolut Vanilla
Splash of simple syrup
2oz pineapple juice
Shake well into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a wedge of lime.
I just might have had a few more than was good for me , but ____________________ 'The core of a man's spirit comes from new experiences'

I went to New Orleans for the Millenium, and people were drinking Hurricanes ... and getting so wasted they could hardly stand up.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_(cocktail)
Kind of ironic, really.
I saw one guy surrounded by a crowd of maybe two dozen people who were howling encouragement ... he was bent over, in that sort of standing-foetal position that one adopts when one is about to chunder.
He was so wankered, he couldn't throw up.
It was horrific to watch. ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

But seriously ...
Lovely!

On the civilised side, I am very fond of cocktails in general.
Off the top of my head, my favourites are:
* whiskey sours (whiskey lemon juice and ... not sure what else),
* tequila sunrises
* strawberry daiquiris
* margaritas
* brandy Alexanders (brandy, cream, curacao, nutmeg). ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

But PROPERLY made, with proper liquor ... not with that disgusting "margarita mix" or "daiquiri mix", ugh.
Don't give me some shite buncho powdered flavour.
Might as well use Kool-Aid ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

Love my shots and cocktails. But I was recently put off by the 'cement mixer' shot - was rank and felt like curd in my mouth |

When it's Revolutions, yes, they don't employ cocktail bar staff, they employ students and the like, also they are inevitably restricted by their amazing vodka based menu.
| G wrote: | The times I've had cocktails in Revolutions they've been better than the only specific cocktail bar locally - which is horribly over-priced and pretentious as well as not making that great drinks. |
Price, I always expect to pay at least £6 for a decent cocktail but that is up north prices, so I suspect I'd be paying more down your neck of the woods. As for pretentious, it depends on the crowd... and whether you insist on going bars in your comfiest trackies and food stained t-shirt I suppose.
| G wrote: | I'm not sure a zombie is a good alternative to shots ever, unless it's free, which has been the situations I have drunk them! |
It's a terrible alternative to a shot... because it's a cocktail.
| G wrote: | Oh and ignore Shaun, liking Vodka is actually allowed, even if it doesn't allow you in to his drinks clique . |
I agree, there's nothing wrong at all with an ice cold drink of some Russian standard with some juice but when you insist on vodka cocktails because you've never tried anything else, well, you're missing out. |

If you've got a sweet tooth you might like this:
https://www.retrotuckshopsweetsdirect.co.uk/images/refresher%20chews.jpg
The Refresher cocktail.
It's a pint glass, full of ice, 1 blue WKD, 1-2 shots of blue aftershock topped up with strongbow/cider to the top.
Gotta love disaronno and coke as a mixer.
Or Midori, vodka and lemonade is a nice cool drink in the summer. ____________________ Rides: Honda XR 125 ('03) Honda CBR 600F ('91), Ducati 916 Biposto ('95) |

Tke people I've had make cocktails in the local revolutions make good cocktails; as I like vodka, their 'restrictive' menu suits me.
It's not the clientèle, which I'm fine with at this other place, it's the ambience - the feeling you're paying for that, not the drinks.
Conversely, upstairs in another local 'trendy restaurant' they have a very good cocktail bar, but unfortunately it's not always open.
A zombie is a 'good way to kick off a messy night' as you say - shots are an alternative to that. I haven't found anyone that would choose one for the taste.
And yes, I have tried plenty of different cocktails made with a large variety of spirits - offered from a variety of places, including various dedicated cocktail bars. This is why I know I generally prefer Vodka. Different people are different, an that . |

Minori, advocate & grenadine is very nice.
The Turtle in Reading does some good cocktails but I don't remember what they were. |
Baileys and Sambuca AND tasbasco is a flatliner. Sambuca on the bottom, tabasco on the bottom. Good way to get you pissed.
Bayleys and Tia Maria/Kalhua is nice. Called a "guiness shot". Tia Maria is nicer than Kalhua, but it depends on your taste.
Advocate.. Do you mean Avocaat? If it's that egg liquer, swap for baileys and it's nicer. Called a squashed frog.
Got the 4th of July, grenadine, blue Curacao (orange liqueur) and vodka, layered (American flag...) You get the biterness of the Vodka but mixed with the sweet grenadine(which you can get alcoholic or non-alcoholic versions, though alcoholic are harder to find) works really wel.
You have the 747 which is basically guiness shot (tia maria with bayleys layered on top) with Amaretto (preferable Dissarono or Luxardo, most others are crap). Absolutely lush. Me and 3 friends polished off 2 bottles of each doing those one night.

Cement mixer. Eurgh. Bayleys and lime cordial. Nassssty shit! Only good for downing competitions mixed with other crap.
And my favourite shot is Brain Damage (Sometimes known as haemorrhage).
Archers (or any peach schnapps), with bayleys layered on top using a the back of a spoon (can just dunk it, but won't look as good if you dunk it) and then a few drops of grenadine. With grenadine being the heaviest and the bayleys being slightly curdled by the archers, it brings the bayleys down to the bottom and forms a "brain"

I work at Revolutions, and the cocktails aren't bad but I don't like the fact that they are restricted to vodka and other things... Like ho they recently introduced the "Classical mojito" with Finlandia lime (lime vodka) and bacardi. I hate serving that as it's not classic at all Everytime someone orders it I warn them it's not classical cause they will complain. though the raspberry and bison versions are nice
Oh and G, I get drinks and food discount at Revs (half price cocktails, buy one get one free on ALL food)
As has been mentioned before, Mojitos. I love them. They are my favourite drink by far and I'm really anal when it comes to making them. Once got given a £10 for one Mojito because it's "the dam best Mojito I've ever tasted". Which was probably one of the best compliments I've ever received! Oh and don't let anyone fool oyu, the Mojito was made with Bacardi first If it's good enough for the Cubans, it's good enough for me.
Mai Tai are nice, white russians, black russians. There's so many "cocktails" that you probably drink already yet you don't know.
Cuba libre.
Just rum and coke with a slice of lime... And that's a cocktail. Normally made with Bacardi or Havana club.
Mudslides at Revolutions are pretty awesome BUT I find quite a lot of staff don't know how to make them. Regulars at my place come to me for Mudslides and Mojitos, cause I don't half arse them. Absolut Vanilia, bayleys and Tech Chocolate, with half n half (3/4 milk and 1/4 cream or something like that) with chocolate sauce. Very chocolatey. Very nice.
Long Island Iced Tea is probably the strongest well known cocktail that's really nice. There are stronger cocktails, but the LIIT will be in most bars where as others won't be.
FYI, I don't rink beer. I'm a spirits man and at every house party I end up being the barman, which has it's merits
Edit: Can you tell I like cocktails? ____________________ '99 Hornet 600 , VFR 400 NC30 '92 , Kasawamasaki GT 550 , '98 Hornet 600

At one party I got bored and decided to make a random shot.
And so the Bleeding Hurricane was evolved.
50ml shot glass.
Ingredients (dashes of, not measured):
Grenadine
Archers
Malibu
Vodka
Blue Curacao
Triple Sec
Bacardi
Russian Standard Vodka
Bayleys
White tequila
May have forgotten a couple of that list
https://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs056.snc3/14336_123418536614_509016614_2986557_1236533_n.jpg

Didn't taste half bad tbh!
And I made a made a new shot recently, Mexican Kamikaze.
Sake, tabasco, tequila on top. Layered like a flatliner. Pretty lethal
Sake on it's own, is pretty nice.
Oh and you have a Blue Lagoon cocktail; Vodka, Blue curacao and lemonade.
Vodka and Orange is a Screwdiver, I believe archers and ornage is Fuzzy navel..
I've got a couple of books somewhere with loads of recipes.
To the OP, having a good ingredients list isn't cheap. you can buy cheap tesco's/sainsbury's equivalent but it will taste crap. So either build through time (like I did) or buy everything at once and screw the rest of the month
What I'd suggest is go out to places and try cocktails and then decide what to buy OR look up cocktail recipes, whether vodka based, rum based, etc or random ones (can usually find sites with reviews from randomers) and go from there.
One thing that's good to have is Angostura Bitters. It's like 43% from memory and it smells amazing. You only usually have a few drops in a drink. ____________________ '99 Hornet 600 , VFR 400 NC30 '92 , Kasawamasaki GT 550 , '98 Hornet 600
