Same as any tuned 4 stroke single, change the oil every 500 miles checking the oil level every 100 miles and a filter change every 1k miles max, its the only way the engine will survive and fit a magnetic drain plug.

Used to get around 45-60mpg out of my DRZ400SM, depending on how I rode it. Oil change every service (around 4k I seem to recall). Didn't use a drop between changes, filter change every other oil change.

DRZ doesnt fall in to the 'tuned 4-stroke' cateogry, doubt the XR does either.

DRZ info stolen from ADVrider wrote:

Valve clearance - inspect at 15,000 miles.

Think most people do oil/filter after 1500 miles. I did oil every 1k and oil/filter every other. Never did enough miles to check valves but apparently they rarely go out (buckets & shims).

Thats what they say but thats why they give trouble, all single cylinder 4 strokes need fresh clean oil if they are to survive, even a cg 125 needs oil changes every 800 miles max, I wouldnt consider changing my oil every 3500 miles on a single as the engine would have suffered a lot of wear as a result, considering how cheap oil is compared to parts for a bike its not really worth not spending ten minutes doing an oil change. I dont know if the drz is in a high state of tune but the xr models are.

I seem to recall my XR having the service intervals of at least oil changes, possibly filter as well every 600 miles according to the manual.

lol@cg needing oil every 800 miles.

lol@xr being in a high state of tune.

I'm sorry, that's complete bullshit.

800 mile old oil will do no harm whatsoever to a CG125. Nor will 500mile old oil to a DRZ-400.

It is not a 'tuned four stroke single', it's a plodder: It's 400cc, water cooled and 35ish bhp. That's actually a fair bit less power per cc than an air cooled CG.

The DR-Z does not require anywhere near as regular oil changes as tuned, competition spec singles (Husky SM510/Husabergs etc). They're in a mild state of tune at best, and I'd personally have no concern going 2000 miles between oil changes, and probably upto 3000, or 4000 if the service schedule suggested it. I suspect the XR400 is largely the same.

In answer the the original question, depending how hard you ride it, MPG should be between 40 and 60. Service and oil no more expensive or demanding than a multi cylinder bike: Even with slightly more regular changes, you're using less oil each time.

Get 60MPG from my DRZ pretty consistently, no matter how I ride. Pretty small tank though so it doesn't feel like it.

sorry to disagree but 35 bhp is a lot for a 400cc single and works out at around the same as a CG @ 9.5 BHP, these singles are all dry sump lubrication so a comparision with a wet sump multi cylinder machine is meaningless, most of the threads on the cg 125 on the workshop section have got to do with dirty oil or the lack of it so I cant see why people cant spend a tenner on oil to prevent hundreds of pounds of damage, thats the point I was trying to make.

Strange comment as in your first post you recommended that the oil be changed "ALL THE TIME"and I do fail to see how recommending frequent oil changes could be demmed as bad advice, but everyone is allowed their opinion Wink

He also suggested getting two of the least reliable/most costly maintenance machines. Even if you didn't know about such bikes, you could probably work out there was some rather thick sarcasm dripping heavily from his post.

With off-road use I would tend to change the DRZ oil more often.
The XRs do have short service intervals listed. However that is for competition riding I believe. The DRZ has it's service intervals listed for your average road riding instead.

So, for a start it'd be useful to know what the OP planned to use it for.

Comparison in terms of what? The Aprilia RSV-R uses a dry sump system and loses out on neither power nor service intervals to it's wet sump competitors (998/SP-1/TL). Whatever the oil system, 35bhp is not a lot for a 400cc single. Comparing it to the CG would be comparing it to an air cooled engine. Compare it with a relatively 'highly tuned 125cc four stroke single such as the YZF-R125 (also has normal 4000 mile service intervals) and it's 14.5bhp per 124cc, which makes 46bhp for a 400cc water cooled single perfectly reasonable.

Of course it can't hurt to change the oil so frequently, but on a 300-400 mile a week machine, it's just impractical to do so. You're perfectly fine sticking with the manufacturers service schedule, which for the DRZ specifies thousands of miles between changes, not hundreds. If you're thrashing it as an off roader, and counting it's use in hours, well, on one hand you've got the wrong machine, but on the other hand, it may be more beneficial to change the oil so frequently. On the road, it'll make little difference, if any.

Alex, as I have said everyone is allowed an opinion but I fail to see how advising frequent oil changes could be bad advice, having owned dozens of japanese 4 stroke singles over the years and sticking to the recommended oil change intervals I have found that the bikes suffer badly in the engine department, examples are CG125, CB125S, Z 200, Z250, XBR 500, XL 125,XL250, SP370,DR350, I could go on but found out that oil was cheaper than pistons, rings, cylinder heads and camchafts so always change my oil on any Japanese bike at 1 k miles or less so I decided to pass this information on to other less experienced riders than myself, like I said oil is cheap, parts are not.

Because, if it's not needed, you're basically recommending they waste money and time.
That's how it could be bad advise.

Around 10 litres I seem to recall.

I usually ran to reserve at around 90-100 miles on mine, so just enough for a couple of days commuting.

The daily round trip to work is around 56 miles or so and the DRZ did it fine, although the seat was pretty uncomfortable unless you move around/stand up for a bit.

It did around 6,000 trouble free miles - about 65% commuting, the rest was just for fun. No trouble with the reliability at all (I can't recall ever owning a single with any reliability issues), but the build quality needed keeping on top of to keep the thing looking smart.

what planet are you from, the xr isnt in a high state of tune,
they are brilliant reliable bikes, probably the best bike honda ever came out with if you exclude the rvfc models, you can happily do a couple of thousand miles between oil changes if its not being thrashed too hard, more if you take it easy,
