Hello wise campers,

Could I trundle off up to the lake district, stop where i want within reason, and pop the tent up for the night? Just fancy doing something with no planning and no deadlines.

Cheers
Stalk.

I imagine you could only get away with it high in the hills.

I assume you're planning on putting everything on your bike and camping next to your bike? Not sure how many suitable places there are really for that in the lake district.

If you're walking, then you could camp up in the hills and you'll get away with it.

These people will have all the info:

I agree with Carvell.

If you're not going August bank holiday weekend you will probably be able to get away with turning up at a campsite and paying on the day. Done it a couple of times and it has been fine Thumbs Up

If you're planning on 'wild camping' go into the Scottish Highlands, camp out in the hills anywhere you like. Done it, great !.

Wild camping is good fun - set up late, away early and no-one's the wiser Wink Think about your toilet needs in advance though - if you're high in the hills, there may be no where to dig, and pooh takes a looooonnnngggg time to rot away on cold stone... take bags please, and use them!

If you're in late and out early you may manage to miss the warden on proper sites (and so not pay Smile ); if you're tidy and polite, pubs or B&Bs will often let you pitch on their gardens for a couple of quid - and use their loos!

It's very rare anyone would bother your tent, just maybe if you left it all day while out walking/riding so don't leave anything worth much.
In a campsite try to talk to neighbours to establish an element of trust for your own peace of mind as much as anything.

The main Lakes area is so popular it is very difficult to find a wild camp spot.
I remember a few possible places south of Coniston and some spots round the more inaccessible western lakes like Wastwater.
Leave no trace behind, it's the ones who leave litter and crap that make landowners barricade everyone out, it's not fun picking up other people's junk after most weekends.
