Lots of people say you can run bikes on car oil fine, I had to get some oil for the TDM late one night, (long story), I bought some Castrol GTX 10w40 from Tesco, £18, I though bargain. Ever since my bike has run shit. It was atrocious from cold, it just felt rough like my chain was really shit (it's not) or there was sand in the gearbox, it felt 'gritty' once it warmed up it was better, but it still wasn't as smooth as before, and I'm pretty sure it was down on power. Nothing felt right, I did this Friday after 3 days riding to work I had had enough, I popped into Halfords on my way home and bought some Castrol power GPS (semi synth bike oil £30) and changed the oil. The difference was astounding the bike fells so my smooth and even more powerful.
Alot of people say you can get away with car oil but I'd never do it again, it was terrible. ____________________ Well, you know what they say. If you want to save the world, you have to push a few old ladies down the stairs.

As a thankyou for servicing the g/fs car, i got 2ltrs of GTX.
Popped it in the bike and haven't noticed any difference compared to bike oils that i've used....But it appears to stay cleaner for longer. My bike doesn't have a proper filter so even after 500miles the oil can look dark brown when i dab abit on my thumbnail. The GTX looks dark yellow after 500 using the same trusty thumbnail.
Somehow i prefer the dark oil after 500miles...makes me feel like the deposits are getting mopped up.

Morrisons is bloody cheap for oil. Its car oil, but as said above it works just fine in a bike. I think the last lot i got from there was £3 for 4 litres. It that price you have no excuse not to change it frequently, so the engine is probably better off that using some expensive stuff for a long time.
Morris oil is also very good. I worked in the factory for a bit, most of their produce gets shipped off and branded as castrol then sold for twice the price |

I get a gallon of silkolene for £8, but I rarely own a bike long enough to do an oil change apart from the initial one I always do when buying a new bike.
