Hope this doesn't sound like a racist topic but am I right thinking the % of bike riders originating from other lands is very low in the UK?

I can honestly think of only one black guy from Newcastle area for example.
Not sure why this should be, although there must be a lot more in the major cities than here in the wilds of northern England.

I have an pakistani origin friend who rides and he went against his familys (mothers) wishes to get a bike. Going against the family is a no no according to his upbringing and they have been quite nasty to him about it, trying to get him to get rid of his bike.

But he is totally western in his thinking and his family are traditional, for want of a better word.

I dont know about "originating in other lands" but if we are getting at skin colour here, as far as riding buddies go i have more black/asian pals on 2 wheels than whites. But then i live in london.

In terms of overall riders white men certainly make up 95% of bikers, this is no surprise though, dispite what the daily mail would have us believe, outside the major cities i am always amazed how few "minorities" you do see, on bikes or otherwise.

I wondered if this was part of it, a different relationship with the family - at least from some countries.

I think most people went against their mother's wishes when purchasing a motorcycle; I know I did. Thumbs Up Non-bikers never understand what we do anyway...

I was working with an Indian contractor in a previous job.
He explained how he used to ride quite a lot in India - lots of wheelies, skitchin and other general stupidity, but as they tended to ride with very little 'protection' due to the heat, decided it was going to end badly at some point, so gave it up.

Being used to India, he'd have probably found it rather cold riding in the UK - partly thanks to his position next to the Air con unit in the lab, he tended to wear a heavy jacket inside while working on a computer!

I'm Vietnamese and got one against my mother's wishes. Then again in Vietnam there's plenty of mopeds.

I have 5 asian friends with bikes. I do live in London. But yes I do mainly see whites on bikes.

Got my mod 1 on saturday! Wish me luck!

My brother in law is Jamaican by heritage but born here. He rides a scooter and is in a scooter club so that doesn't count.

an Indian sales men in George white spoke to me about this, saying it wasn't common. i had noticed that from what iv seen with my own eyes,
but was confused as its popular transport in Indian its self.

like chris said, there are more in London (and other major city's), though i would still assume the majority are white.

i think it has a lot to do with up bringing, money, and how motorcycles are perceived.

i remember reading in one of the popular bike mags about the R1 and R6 holding a "status symbol" in the black biking community.
i was surprised it was in the mag, but it holds truth.

**edit** Laughing i swear every you-tube viedo with a black guy/girl in it, brings on a swarm of racial comments Rolling Eyes

Assuming that people with a duskier skin tone than thee all originate from 'other lands' is pretty racist, yes.

As per others, come to London, plenty round here - both British-born and 'from other lands'.

So what is the correct term to use for those of a darker complection to myself these days?
Or does one have to list every nation and the combination of those nations?
Obviously listed in every language likely to have ever been used on the earth. Or is that Alienist?

Im chinese, born in Birmignham with a full licence Cool

as for "going against my mothers wishes" My experience is quite the opposite, she quite like the idea of me getting a bike and on the day I passed my test she was the first on the back Laughing

As for other riders, around here anyway they have all been white.

Surely that is racist to lump all the different races as " White "

I think the reason blacks don't cotton to bikes is they have throttles instead of triggers.

Laughing

The reason whites do is most have tiny talliwhackers.

(see what I did there...)
