OK, I have an install of Ubuntu on this PC which I have been playing with for a few days and can honestly say I am starting to like.
Today, I have mostly been trying to set up a network drive on it for MrsHippy to access on her Vista laptop. I have managed to work out how to tell the Ubuntu PC to share it's folders, and MrsHippy can see them on her Vista machine, but when she tries to connect to them it asks her for a user name and password. Now I don't think I have set it up to ask for one (I'm sure I didn't in fact), and she has tried my Unix login username/password but this hasn't helped.
Can any of our resident Linux gurus suggest what I may have got wrong?

I cant find the page i used to solve the same problem, but it was something along these lines (copied from here)

Quote:
Edit your /etc/samba/smb.conf file and add the following lines in the global section:

workgroup = <your-workname>
netbios name = <your_ubuntu_net_ bios name>
security = SHARE
wins support = Yes

Mine is setup as follows:
workgroup = LAPID
netbios name = UBUN890B
security = SHARE
wins support = Yes

Make sure to check that there are no other lines saying otherwise, like some win support=no" somewhere in that file.
Also samba, nfts-3g, ntfs-config are installed.

I only use SUSE but it's probably along the same lines. For a no security share I simply add the following in smb.conf ...

[share name]
comment = share description
guest ok = Yes
read only = No
path = /path/to/shared/folder

In the dialog for creating the share, make sure you tick the option to allow guest access:
