why is the floor paint normally red?

obviously lots have grey or silver floor paint (or no paint) but the common thing is red.

Why?

(girlfriend made me ask)

To hide the blood stains when they kill people who ask why the floor is red!

Could be because it's easier to see spanners/tools against a red background?

Must admit I painted my workshop floor red, there was no particular reason I chose red.

Was thinking this too, especially with bolts/screws.

Because, for a long time floor tiles were always red. So for floor paint they just follow that lead.

I painted mine red because rusty and grey things show up against it, and it means I could tell which bits were painted and which bits were concrete when I was doing it. There was more red paint on the shelf as well.

I can offer a more plausible/artsy fartsy reason too.

Garages, traditionally werent very well insulated, or heated, and Red is a warm feeling, making the place 'feel' warmer. It also makes you hungry, which is probably where the so many tea and biscuit breaks come from!

Traditionally workshop floors were painted with lead oxide (red lead) paint because of its waterproof and anti-corrosive properties.

I wouldn't mind but it doesn't seem to matter how well you paint it, it always chips/comes away and then looks tatty!! Embarassed

I bet with you being a Girly person you wont just get RED paint. It will have to be meadow flower red or sunshine daisy red or straw fire red. or even not have red in the name, summer tulip, or love heart rose.

Inside the house I've painted all the walls and ceilings Dulux White to make life simple and non fussy! I'm not a particularly girly female, hence the reason I'm painting my garage floor and working on the bikes and DIY stuff in there!

If I was a proper girly girl, I'd have myself a male slave to do it for me!! Thinking

I did mine (in green) really just to seal the concrete floor and prevent all the dust.

The paint isn't too expensive from Wickes - cost about 40 quid to do mine, and its a big garage. That was 3 coats. To stop it flaking you need to wash the concrete with patio cleaner first. Took me half a day to get mine swept, cleaned and rinsed enough for painting, then another day to dry before I could paint. The patio cleaner fizzes when it goes on and lifts loads of crap from the top layer of concrete.

You need to leave the paint a week to fully cure before stepping or putting anything on it as well.
