Need info and your opinion on Hyosung GT650R & Suzuki SV

I am considering buying something reliable as I will be covering long distances (130+ miles) every couple of weeks.

So far I have seen two bikes I like, these are:
2007 Hyosung GT650R and 2000 Suzuki SV650

The insurance for GT650R is only £200, £150 cheaper than for SV650.
Which make it more attractive for a poor student

I am only 20 years old, thus any bike I get I will have to get restricted to 33bhp.
How are these bikes/models restricted?



Are they reliable ? With no design / mamanifactureaults?


Are they any other large 400-650cc you can recommend me?

SV will be easier to get parts for and more reliable.

Get an SV. Don't be tempted to get a Hyosung just because you could get a newer one for the same money.

Well I know there are far more SV's on the roads than Hyosungs, but even still, I have heard of quite a few horror stories regarding the GT650R.

My SV has been great. Had it about 15 months and all I have done to it is change the regulator/rectifier. (Common fault on older Suzuki's so I'm told)

I know it's not the 650 but I use my 06 plate Comet GT250 everyday for commuting and it has never let me down on cold mornings or in the peeing down Somerset rain. The engine is smooth, handling is sweet and the finish is up there with the Suzuki that i had a few years ago.

Take both out for a ride and I think you will be suprised although the SV is a lovely bike too.

Picked mine up on a 06 for £600 on ebay, it all depends if you care what badge is on your tank

I had a hyosung xrx125sm and i can honestly say i would never touch a hyosung bike ever again.

It rode ok, after spending £££ on it, but then the electrics decided to die on it ended up selling it on for £700.

absolute sack of shite, but it did its job and got me through my test

The Hyosung may work perfectly for the next 6 months, you might not have an issues what so ever, but I'm guessing you don't have any experience working on bikes, and good luck finding a local mechanic to fix it when something does need doing.

You've got to think why the Hyosung is so cheap.

I know a guy who owns a riding school near here, and he bought a set of 6 hyosungs. His reasoning was that they were going to get battered anyway.

Thing is, Jap bikes are famous for their reliability, the Korean and Chinese bikes - total opposite.

They're cheap bikes made from cheap materials. It doesnt come down to just the badge, you gotta buy something that will last. So shop around and get yourself a well looked after SV.

You'll also receive a lot more help with a jap bike, my local Honda dealer, Hartgate, has a sign up telling people with chinese bikes to bugger off!

In fairness from what I have seen of them about the place the Hyosungs definitely look a lot better than the average chinese pile of junk, the come from the same country as the hyundai coupe which is a pretty good car so it's not like they're not capable of decent quality control.

But with a japanese bike you have 30 odd years worth of franchise infrastructure already in place, you will always be able to get parts and there will always be a mechanic who knows exactly what it is (s)he's looking at.

With that particular choice, I'd pick the Hyosung.

But you can pick up SVs for peanuts if you look hard enough, often with fewer miles and in mint condition. So I'd suggest you look for a <20k miles 2002+ SV650 and bargain the seller down a little.

ive picked up a mint 2000 model sv650s in red with 9k on the clock for £1100 (ebay bidding ended at £900 but reserve not met) - why would you consider a hyosung when they are this cheap?

practically all the mechanics near where i live refuse to look at or work on korean and chinese bikes. They say that when things go wrong it makes their workmanship look bad. So thats whats really put me off these bikes - I just avoid them like the plague!

It's quite funny that when my ZXR used to run like shit in winter because it had to have a heated carb mod and the Suzuki Katana that used to run like shit in the rain unless I soaked it with a litre of WD40 that they were not called a jap pile of shite.......

I'm not saying that Hyosung are the best bikes since sliced bread but it's certainly not a chinese pile of cr*p made from cheap materials (apart from the exhaust!). Between ebay, pattern parts and dealers everything is fairly easy to come by and like any bike as long as you take care of it then it will take care of you.

Unlike most posters here I actually own and ride one everyday whatever weather is outside and it has never let me down.

If the OP wants a cheap bike thats fairly new then it's not a bad choice .
