PostPosted: 11:59 - 24 Aug 2010    Post subject: Bike insurance/going to uni Reply with quote

I'm moving to Manchester (from North Wales) in September to go to uni and I fully intend to take my bike with me. I'll be living in student halls for the first year and then hopefully moving into some kind of house share in the second and third years but with all the moving around and probably coming home in the summers will I be legally ok to have my bike insured at "home" in North Wales?

2 reasons I ask really. First is it'll cost way more to insure my bike in Manchester than it will do in North Wales and secondly I don't want to be pulled over every 200 yards in Manchester because the police think my bike is stolen.

ANPR only shows whether a vehicle is taxed and insured, rather than where IIRC, so that shouldn't be a problem. Unsure of the legality of insuring it in North Wales when you're living in Mancs unfortunately.

Funnily enough, people use vehicles to travel so you wont get pulled as the ANPR says you are not from the area.

If your bike gets nicked/crashed and it is not where you said it would be they may increase your excess (if you can convince them you NORMALLY keep it at home) or more likely they will refuse to pay you anything.

If you cause damage to a third party then most likely they will pay the claim and seek to recover costs, if you are poor (student) then it is unlikely they will waste the money recovering it but its a crappy situation to be in none the less.

If it were a car (lower risk of theft) I might be tempted to risk it but with a bike it makes sense to get it insured where you will actually be keeping it.

FYI, I asked my ins company once about how much of the time constitutes 'normally kept', they said 60% of the time (that was MCE last year).

Personally, I would just take it. In the event of an accident they won't care where it was normally kept since it has no bearing on the liability, if it's stolen I would just claim it was the first time I'd taken it to Uni and make up some excuse why I did like a family member was illand I needed to have it on-hand in case I got a call etc.

Going to uni this year, not going to take my bike, but might buy a 125 or something down there. The one I'm going to prefer the more human powered bikes Sad.

Only a small city as well so won't need it really but I will miss it for ten weeks.

What you doing at uni?

I'm gettin an SV650 on thursday but not taking it. Might take it to halls if there is somewhere secure to keep it, and in March when the weather begins to improve.

Cheers guys!

My main worry really is my bike getting nicked but there's quite a few little nooks and crannies at the halls that I should be able to hide it in if I can sweet talk the caretaker into letting me stash it, out of sight out of mind and all that.

This sounds like the best plan and is probably what I'll do Thumbs Up

I know I won't be using my bike half as much as I do at the moment but I can't be without it, I'm pretty sure I'd end up going on a killing spree if I couldn't go for a ride on my bike! I'm going to be relying on my mountain bike for day to day transport as I'll only be living 2 miles away from the college but I'll only get cranky if I don't get out on it at the weekend Sad

I'm going to be doing a degree in music industry studies, basically a really good way to build up a load of contacts in a short time in a really lively music scene!

Is that seriously a course? What do you actually do with said 'contacts'?

Simple answer. No. Legally, you're not ok.

My mate was in a similar situation but in reverse, i.e. he had his bike insured at his flat in fallowfield and then when he moved back "home" to his folks house he had his SV swiped off his driveway after a few weeks. He was honest and told the insurers he just moved but hadnt got round to changing the address yet. Insurers wouldn't pay out because he had not notified them. So mine and his tip would be, if it gets robbed just lie and say you was visiting someone.

Just going into my second year of uni now. I took my bike down last year in freshers, didn't tell my insurance and i'm not planning on telling them again this year.

If it disappears, it disappeared from my locked garage at home. Thumbs Up

Manchester? I will hopefully be visiting a couple of mates at uni there, for some climbing, some partying and since you're there, some good bike pictures and action pictures Wink

Well obviously it's a course if I'm going to study it...

Do I really need to explain what I'd do with industry contacts I'd make? Surely it depends on what my personal long term goals are? I could be some DJ trying to get stuff played in Ibiza or I could be some singer/songwriter looking for a way to get heard by labels. I could be someone who wants to start up a record label or I could be someone that wants to get into tour management. Obviously my choices/decisions will be influenced by the people I know, if I don't know anyone then I won't get anywhere but if I have some contacts it's a start at least.

I'm not expecting to meet the head of Sony's record label on this course or be offered some sweet job scouting new talent out for a major label but it'll give me the chance to pursue my personal goals in a really lively music scene whilst learning about the industry in general, I'm paying for the course so what difference does it make to you what I spend my money on?

So that when the insurance company comes along and investigates the circumstances of the theft they hear that "yeah he always parked his bike there" from a witness investigate more for possible fraud, see cctv footage of him regularly keeping it in the area and then he finds himself being prosecuted for insurance fraud.

Oh and you'll be staying in a uni area, you'll almost certainly get investigated. As most students will be trying the same thing. Only requires a phone call to your parents neighbours and you're screwed.

So yes, totally awesome idea

I've not been living at my parents house for about 3 years now, (admittedly I've only moved about 10 miles) but everything (bank, ins, v5s etc) goes to their address. It's just easier for me.

Plus I always have some form of bike at their house so it's not like the unknowledgable neighbors could say no there isn't one. Who's to say it isn't in the back garden hidden from view most of the time and only rarely used BECAUSE he's at uni.

But if they were to ask if you had a bike at the uni end you would be screwed.

It's a chance I'd take. The easiset answer by far would be to hole it up as much as possible all of the time. No being lazy and running 10 minutes late so can't chain it up right now, just all of the time.

It'd be interesting to see how many insurance companies do go out of the way to chase up CCTV and interview witnesses or ring up neighbours or parents... My dealing with them in the past is that they tend to be terribly lazy. You have to provide all that yourself, and the places I approached, as well as the council they tend to keep cctv recordings for just 30 days if the police have not requested a copy. In 99% of cases I'd imagine they'd get a crime number, read the police report, wait to see if it turns up in the next few weeks then decide whether to pay out or not.

Y not just ring the ins. company and ask? I doubt they would expect you to 'change' addresses every time you go back home/back to uni. IMO your home address is still your home address and you just stay at uni for some of the year.Thats not fraud....you live at home and study in Manchester. Before i got married i stayed half the time at my ex-girlfriends house and left my bike on the drive - I didnt have to tell the insurance every day i went there.

Maybe your contacts will get you a spot on xfactor? Wink

Grey area.

It's commonly done, but it's a perfect excuse for an insurer not to pay out and lying about claims is insurance fraud - Whether or not they catch you is something else, as i'd wager that evidence of the bike being elsewhere to the home address on a certain date/time is not sufficient evidence that insurance fraud has taken place. And hearsay about where "a bike" is, is hardly going to convict you - although it may be enough for them to feel they don't have to pay out - if indeed they bother to check.

I've asked before and was told it was "4 over 7" (average?) nights. So you are allowed to visit places! But in the end the fact your bike is going to uni with you should in thoery be declared as it's a "material fact". Many insurance websites give you an option to put in a postcode for the bike being kept at an alternate address. But expect to be done over if you do declare though, especially if you want theft covered.

Note too, that the chance of your being in a fault accident varies based on your location too (i.e. premium changes) - so it's not *just* about theft risks.

I know from a friend involved in a prang in a car that tescos insurance investigated him for fraud, car wasn't even written off just a hefty repair. Took almost a year for him to get anywhere.

Insurance companies aren't newbies to this game when uni students try it everytime they go away it's not that much effort to save paying out several thousand. It's an easy target. I'd declare it as a second place that you leave your bike overnight, easy enough.

Oh and I'm a fan of having everything go to my parents, too... Except insurance is set up for the right place Smile

My son has our home address as his communication address - all V5 etc come here.
When he went to uni last year we phoned the insurance company and explained the situation. There was a small extra premium to pay(uni in central Plymouth vs leafy surrey) We did also fit a Datatool alarm for extra security and the bike was parked on campus within view of his halls.
