My girlfriend and I have a kitten who is now 12 weeks ish old, he needs to goto vet for a few things, and i have been toying with the idea of bungeeing his pet carrier to the pillion seat, possibly with a sheet over the back and sides, and taking it very easy avoiding pot holes etc.

Has anyone done this before? does it sound like animal cruelty?, i know theres only one way to find out if he would like it but i thought it might be prudent to ask the BCF massiv for any experiences they might have..

Thoughts? suggestions?

My mum would often carry cats in a 'Billum' string bag. In this country you would get some funny looks, but the cats seemed fine with it.
Not sure I'd try it on a bike, though; and of course finding one in the UK is a bit harder!

A billum being used for human transport:

Yeah i would take it very easy,

My concerns are that he freaks out with the noise/vibes (i guess you can only find out by doing)

And that he slides around in the carrier (i figured putting a load of blankets/padding would help.

Also reckon its better to cover the whole thing up and keep him in the dark or no cover?

What ill likely do is, rig it up, and just take him down the road and back to see his reaction..

He'll probably have the time of his life. I really wouldn't worry.

Haha, when I had to look after a cat the thing fucking hated the little cage!

He went mad enough in the back of the car, meowing... shitting... pissing everywhere. On the bike however might scare it so much it's fine Mr. Green

Lol good luck Thumbs Up

Atleast you might be able to use the phrase 'killing kittens' quite literally if it all goes wrong? Laughing

The trick to making sure a cat is happy in it's carry case/cage is to use it as a cat bed about the place on a day-to-day basis (take the door off). It was a top tip given to me when I bought my kittens 2 years ago. I have one carrier tucked against the heater behind the sofa and the other next to the heater in my bedroom. Both are used regularly and I never have tantrums getting them to the Vet. You have to have a carrier, so need to put it somewhere and it saves buying a special bed that they won't use anyway!! Rolling Eyes

As for the carrier on the bike - I'd suggest a topbox-style arrangement if it's possible with adequate ventilation and non slip matting. Otherwise, I think you will find it best to keep it covered, as I'm quite sure the kitten will be frightened by seeing everything outside. Also, as an aside if the carrier is covered you are less likely to get someone reporting you/making a fuss. I'm thinking if it's something the cat gets used to at a young age I see no reason why it would have a problem with it as long as it's secured properly.

Good luck!! Mr. Green

Take ours to the vets on the bike, and it don't seem to bother her too much... Cool

Do have a top box that the Cat box fits into nicely, does leave the lid open by a few inches, which i bungee down.
This does give her a nice view as we drive along.

I suppose there is an argument for keeping the cat in the dark so to speak,
but cats are really inquisitive by nature so more visual stimulus shouldn't really be a problem.

ride careful, avoid speed bumps etc and don't try putting the knee down , Laughing and all should be ok Thumbs Up

I'm sure it'll be fine.

I used to see a bloke turn up at St Annes bike meet on a scooter with a dog in the topbox; that seemed perfectly happy Laughing

this is not as daft as it sounds..........
being only 12 weeks old, now is an ideal time to introduce the kitten to the sounds/smells of outside.
if it was a fully grown adult cat, going onto the back of a bike, for the 1st time, would be a frightening experience & would be bordering on cruelty.
being a kitten, however, makes it more of an adventure for it.
certainly wouldnt go on any busy roads etc.
i wouldnt have a problem putting my cat in a basket & bungeeing it to the seat (in fact i have done this before)
be prepared for some tantrums when you try ketting the kitten into the box & when you 1st take it outside, lol
cheers,
GAZ

ps : pics plz
