Has anyone had their hand pinned?

If so how long, after your pins were removed, did it take to ride your bike again?

I snapped the metacarpel of my left thumb right by the carpel bone. It's pinned to the opposite bones.

4 weeks then cast off, pins out. but who knows what ligament/tissue damage I have.

Pics here https://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=203119&id=604606335&l=6d8c97901b

I'm slowly regaining use of my shoulder, but have possible nerve damage.

Not done it before, but thinking if its your left hand, and you have a reasonably heavy clutch that might hurt somewhat. Other than that, you can relax your hand while riding.

Never good to have an accident though, hope you're better soon Thumbs Up

i broke same bone as that in the pic but at the top not the bottom about 15 years ago, the grief that gave me was unreal and still twangs me to this day, any pressure pushed on the end of the thumb absolutely nacked for about 2 year ish and even now if i catch the end of my thumb it still lets me know about it, was about 2-3 months before i could ride again without it totally nacking and being able to grip half decent, mines on the right thumb and was done in a big moto-x off along with me colar bone and i tell you the thumb break was the worse of the 2.

I rode with a broken hand back in 2007.

Went to the Drs and they wouldn't even x-ray it.

I year later when i complained, they x-rayed it to reveal that the break was still there.

Hurt like a mother ****** but i could ride just fine

I rode with a pin sticking out of my right hand (knuckle-socket was broken, ligament removed) with no problems.

After a VERY bad accident, I had to have three fingers and part of my palm rebuilt out of bits of my arse and thigh.
If it`s anywhere as bad as mine you wont want to ride for months.
you may be able to operate the controls but it will be very uncomftable.
Being able to do it and wanting to do it are completely different.

It does get better but it`s never right/100%/as it was before.

My accident happened 22 years ago and I still struggle when the weather is cold.

My advice would be = dont push it, give it time to FULLY heal.
Just because it looks right on the outside, does`nt mean that all is right on the inside, that takes longer.

Hope it all goes well Thumbs Up

I broke my finger a couple years back and that was absolute agony, I broke nearly 18 bones in the crash in October, major surgery and that hurt less than the fvcking broken finger!

I was riding with it broken 2 weeks later mind, was in a splint, did my CBT with it broken and broke it again and still passed my CBT, my clutch hand too. Man up. Wink!

Its called a bennets or boxers fracture I think. I rode they day after they took the pin out of mine.

Did they leave a metal hoop sticking out of your skin?

If so they just yank the pin out with a pair of pliers. It hurts. Alot.

How are they going to treat it? Surgically or non-surgically?

If it's a complete ACJ seperation I'd expect surgery.

As for cutting my nails, that one grows weird now as I lost the nail during surgery, when I took that picture I'd just got away from doing the bike! Laughing!

@Fisty, boxers fracture is the 5th metacarpal (bone in back of hand for little finger)

I've snapped the thumb metacarpal at the base by the carpal bone/wrist joint.

I have no use of my thumb as it's pinned in two places.

Try everyday tasks without using your thumb. lol.

@Paulington, I'm awaiting an appointment for a nerve conduction study, I have to wait until all the swelling has gone down and the shoulder resettles. That will tell which nerves are still working and it's then physio for a few months. The tendons between the scapula and clavical have been damaged and that movement is missing (shoulder/arm socket works)

It's all good and well for those saying it's only this or that, I rode my bike blah blah. I'm not a soft lad, I have a limb / hand which doesn't function, a solid fibre glass cast up my forearm and hand.

It would have been simpler had my collar bone just snapped rather than seperate my shuolder, but I've always been told by Doctors I have very strong bones...
