Ok guys, is this worth fixing, if so any ideas whats gone wrong.

I'll tell you all the story of what I know, Which isnt much sadly. The eldest (15yrs old) was on the pc night before last while the grown ups went to bed. I awoke on the morning and turned the pc on only to find nothing happening. No power at all. Some time later I tried again and the pc powered up and seemed to run fine for me.

I had to pop out for a bit for shopping and when I came back the eldest was on the pc but it had frozen. No response to anything. The mouse pointer still moved around but everything was locked up. Then the base unit beeped continuously. Just one beep but it went on and on until I was left with no option to turn the pc off by the wall. Since then (yesterday lunchtime) the pc wont turn on at all, no response.

On screen when it crashed with the eldest was 2 browser pages, 1 had 3 tabs, facebook, youtube and something else. The other was that e buddy thing she has started using recently. Could that e buddy thing have caused the meltdown? Or could this be a problem with the internals of the base unit?

I had upgraded the ram in it a few weeks ago and the thing was running great until this happened. I have ordered another base unit but if this old one is fixable with reasonable cost I could get it fixed and the eldest can keep off the new one!

Sounds like the PSU was going and has now gone (classic symptoms). Next thing in line would be the RAM, though even with that totally dead you'd still get life out of the box.

Agree with Hetzer.

Swap out the PSU and also give the fan/heatsink a good clean to make sure the cpu isn't overheating.

Try removing the new RAM, I've had loads of similar problems with dodgy RAM and volatge issues.

Investigate the PSU first. Easiest way is to temporarily swop it with a known working PSU (i.e. one from another machine). Note: Don't try using an old low power PSU on a new high spec machine as it's unlikely to have the juice to make it work.

you say it kept beeping?

what kind of beeps would you say it was doing?

check the list below:

Code:

Beep Code -  Description of Problem:
No Beeps -  Short, No power, Bad CPU/MB, Loose Peripherals
One Beep  -  Everything is normal and Computer POSTed fine
Two Beeps  -  POST/CMOS Error
One Long Beep, One Short Beep  -  Motherboard Problem
One Long Beep, Two Short Beeps -   Video Problem
One Long Beep, Three Short Beeps  -  Video Problem
Three Long Beeps  -  Keyboard Error
Repeated Long Beeps  -  Memory Error
Continuous Hi-Lo Beeps  -  CPU Overheating

should help point you in the right direction.

first port of call is always reseat memory/cards, check fans and power connectors are plugged in etc..

Thanks supz very helpful. however my beep isnt in that list. One continous beep.

We have a new base unit ordered and we are going to get a new psu for the dead one and see if that fixes it. It isnt the ram as I had the 2 cards out one at a time and still no life in the pc. If the new psu fixes the problem then the eldest can have it and keep the fuck off the new one.

i am guessing maybe a hard drive failure or psu failure.
if you have access to another pc and download a version of linux. ubuntu can be installed and run off a usb stick in about 10/15minutes.
check all the power connections
