My mom just got robbed.
She had a phone call at about 8 tonight from a guy alleging he was from BT and asked why she had not replied to their letters about the digital change over. They said she would not be able to use her phone unless they did some modifications and it would cost her £6. She protested but they said if she was over 65 she would get a free handset they said that they were based in Stoke but could maybe get an engineer to the house tonight. They phoned back and said an engineer could be with her in a quarter of an hour and he was, He said he was not able to accept cash and took her debit card and put it in a machine but it did not work. He persuaded her to let him take the card away and got her PIN number (I know. but she is 83). By the time she called me she had got taken for £130.
She is giving statements to the police right now.

Utter scum.

'Scum' is a much over used word these days but the people who pull this kind of scam try deserve to be called it.

May they die in pain.

We are all to willing to give out information. They got her's from the phone book ( why anyone wants to be in the phone book god alone knows, you do half the crooks work for them).
I bought a new phone last week, they called me today to tell me the benefits of being with Orange, I do not like being phoned and was grumpy with the sales twonk. He asked me for my address and date of birth so he could verify who I was.
I am a suspicious sod, I do not doubt that it was Orange but in reality it should be me checking who they are rather that them checking who I am. I told him I am perfectly able to work a phone and instructed him to never call me again.
It is so easy to give out important information, don't.

I have had credit card companies and banks call me. When I ask them to prove who they are it seems to take the wind out of their sails because it's not in the call centre script. Gets them really confused.

I have since found out for credit cards that you can call them and give them a password to enter on their system. If they are genuine they should be able to tell you this. Haven't had chance to try it out in practice yet.

Bottom line, just don't accept any cold calls asking for information.

On the original topic I hope it gets sorted and there is some justice*

Thumbs Up

Obviously my mom called the bank and told them what had happened.
Whilst she was talking to the cops the phone rang and I answered. A guy said he was from her bank, I repeated this to the cop and he indicated to me to pass it to mom. As soon as she spoke they hung up. Number withheld .

Aw man sorry to hear this,

my almost 89 year old grandfather was very close to being conned as well, but this time a "Spanish lottery company" told him he won a shit load of money etc etc, got his basic bank details (only enough to enter money in to his account, not remove)

thankfully i think he caught on to it and showed me the letter, (i pretty much live with him) I told him right away to wake up this is obviously a scam and they never got a penny.

I think its a good idea to try and remind people not to just give away their details so easily!

sorry for the rant Confused Laughing

Why do old people become retarded once they hit 80? 70-80 everything works, then bosh... purse in the refrigerator and buying magic beans.

Bloke who lived in the maisonette below me will be 100 in February. Sure, he was rather doddery and needed enough help he had to go to live in a home a few months ago, but he could still hold a decent conversation and generally knew what was going on.

My Gran on the other hand is in her 80s and really going down hill - not helped by the fact she hardly eats anything.

They don't become retarded, they often have dementia set in. They can't help it and it can start at pretty much any age, some get it others don't. It's a known fact and they need to be protected and sheltered from things like this in the same way that families look after and protect naive and innocent children.

Like Flip said thank goodness that you were there to help her and stop anything worse happening if that next phone call was also the same knob trying to scam some more. The most difficult thing now is to make sure that she gets the balance between being a bit more careful and not become paranoid and worried all the time.

Similar thing happened to my mum.

She doesn't speak English that great and two guys knocked on the door pretending to be some kind of utility people.

Then they started checking out the gas or whatever so went to the bedroom to do soemthing.

Next thing she realises they are up stairs ransacking through rooms. She runs back to her room, locks the door and calls the police and apparently she was so scared she psised herself.

Apparently they didn't get anything which was the good news.

My mum never told me this til 1 year later and I was pissed at her.

Don't be such an insensitive arsehole. One day you'll be old and confused and getting robbed by conmen scum yourself. And youngsters pointing out that you're not as sharp as you used to be for some reason doesn't help.

Its a shit thing to have happen and on the cowardly criminal activity scale is fairly close to being the most craven thing a person could do.

This is a worry I have with my dad, he's at home (was going into a res home but 'decided' he didn'#t want to) and suffers from encephalopathy (liver disease related.) I like to think if someone turned up on the doorstep, as soon cash was mentioned my dad would feck them off but... Before his liver did fail 18 months ago, he had his card double dipped in Tenerife to the tune of e1800.
