Hi guys,

New to the forum. Got my first bike two days ago (i'm 19) - an ebay steal at £211 with ten months MOT and 12 months tax. Its a red honda CB100N and i love it. Have come from the saab community (would strongly recommend), where i owned one when on a year out between school and uni, but had to sell her as 20mpg around town was proving too much to afford.

So, i have a few questions. Sorry if they are frequently asked, i'm a newbie.

1. My bike is leaking around 4 drips of oil a night. The dipstick level has remained fine since i got her, but i'm concerned nonetheless. My flatemate (also a biker, and his dad is a serious biker - norton commando etc) has said that its fine and normal as old bikes (mines a 1981) have really rubbish gaskets because the metals are cast iron that they are trying to seal. Is this true or should i buy a new gasket set? I don't like losing oil, on my car that cost me an engine after losing oil for just two weeks.

2. When indicating, it beeps. Almost like a lorry backing up. I'm guessing it's probably because the bike is old and doesn't have the push in bit for the indicators, so it reminds people to push it back left or right. Is there a way to disable this buzz though? Its very embarrassing, i've been driving through town stopped at traffic lights indicating, and most people give me a look if so the bike has been stolen and thats an alarm going off!

3. Is there any easy way to convert it to 12V? The lights are so, so dim, its like an old dynamo.

Thanks for any and all help guys, much appreciated.

Tom

1. It's normal. Ideally you wouldn't have any leaks, but it's unlikely to be anything to worry about. Every Honda I've had bar the Revere has leaked oil. Superdreams, CGs, C50/70/90s, CB100s etc are virtually never oiltight, unless very recently rebuilt.

2. Shouldn't be much trouble to find the little speaker thing and remove or disconnect it so you don't have the bleep when the indicators are on. I the CB100 I had years ago didn't do it. Don't think that's standard but I could be wrong.

3. No. It's possible but it's a pain in the arse.
