Some time ago I had a wire from the ignition split and snap. We'd temporarily bodged it with a candybar connector and it's held til yesterday morning.
Sadly due to the wire having very little play the movement of the handlebars over time has caused the wire to break where it was held in the connector. It did this when i was just about to go out to collect my mums prescription and then take it up to her house.

So I wheeled it back to my house (was only 2 mins walk) and set to. went into the pile of crap in the shed (a pile of bits and pieces of machinery and electronics that no longer work) and grabbed a power cord. Stripped the ends, and using 2 candybar connectors I added the short length of wire to the existing ignition wire. Added electrical tape and jobs a good 'un.
I may do a proper job sometime but until then this will do Very Happy

Photo of the bodge, see if you can spot it..it's very well hidden! Very Happy

Make sure that the iron is 75 watts or larger, the 25 watt ones won't do harness repairs.

Camp stove + 6" nail + molegrips = soldering iron.

Haven't soldered since I was 22 or so but I am sure I can manage..that's only 13 years ago.

Besides, it's only soldering 2 wires together, not exactly rocket science! Don't think I'd be up to soldering any stuff like circuit boards though Razz

Why not?

There is nothing wrong with a choc-block .... if you can do household stuff with them (240v 13A AC mains), why should one squirm at the thought of some piddly 12v DC system!?!? Thinking

Sure, solder and heat shrink is the way forward, but as a temporary measure, I see this is fine .... arguably much better than the standard 'twist and tape' which is normally employed in such situations!?!?! Razz

For me it isn't that it won't handle the power, as it will do that happily, it is the amount the wiring can shift around on a bike as opposed to a house where it is fixed.

Vibration and bumps will loosen the connectors off slightly, queue the wire falling out, not something I would use on a bike either

But as long as it is all taped up nicely, I really can't even see that is a problem as the wire ends aren't really taking any load ....

Okay John, for your benefit I'll rephrase that, a 75 watt iron is better that a 25 watt iron on heavy wires, ok?

Roy.

chocolate blocks - fine short term, long-term they don't provide any strain relief and the metal bits rot in the damp, all of which makes you fume when you lift the seat off your "new" bike and find 50 of them in there Smile

We call them domino block connectors around these parts (can't for the life of me think why Wink ). Anyways they are, as previously pointed out, crap and totally unsuitable for automotive usage. Often, whilst tightening the connector screws, you will sever a number of strands of wire and whats left will quickly corrode due to water ingress.
