Been in the market for a 125 for quite a while, this CG popped up on eBay and was close, so naturally I thought, now's as good a time as any, and bought it Smile. 1999 with 14k + a bit on the clocks.

Had it a week so far and just really been trying to get it ready to go through an MoT.

Here are the compulsory camera phone photographs, I apologise in advance for how sh*t they are!

(that's my mate's VanVan in the background of the first pic)

https://i973.photobucket.com/albums/ae216/19sherman92/Bzr-gWkKGrHqEOKiUEQHiJgLBMHfF3riQ_12.jpg

So far I have replaced the battery, fitted an iridium spark plug cos the other was crap, fitted mirrors, and realigned the rear wheel and brought it back a bit to tighten the chain up.

Before I can put it through it's MoT it requires new fork seals as the forks bottom out as soon as the bike is sat on, and the forks were covered in oil when I bought the bike, so I'm assuming that it's seals that are the problem..?

It needs a new exhaust as there's a small hole in the downpipe.

And it needs a new front tyre.

Sorry about it being a long one guys!! Laughing

Ohhh, and if I have gaiters do I need dust seals? 'Cause I pulled the gaiters up to check the seals were even there to start with, and there were no dust seals, which I found peculiar.

Cheers,

Steve.

Yes you will need dust seals, check the forks aren't pitted as they will rip through your seals instantly.

Ah crap, cheers though man.

Will have to invest in some dust seals then. And if I'm doing that, I'll probably get rid of the gaiters.

Is fork oil & seals an easy enough job to do? ~£20 to do it myself seems a hell of a lot more appealing than ~£100 for a dealer to do it, that's all.

Cheers,

Steve.

The hardest bit is getting the old seals out, but it's a fairly easy job aslong as you remember where everything goes. May aswell give it a go and put the money you save into the tyre and downpipe etc Thumbs Up.

Nice bike btw Cool.

Even if you have duff fork seals, your forks should not bottom out as soon as you sit on it??.
Sorry to be the bringer of doom, but i think you need to check the fork springs as well....... just to be on the safe side.

Long live the mighty CG Thumbs Up one day we will rule the World Smile

Aye mate I'll have to admit I exaggerated a tiny bit there. Despite the seals being well 'n truly shagged, the forks still have a bit of spring left in them, just nowhere near as much as there would be with decent seals.

BUT it really does bottom out as soon as I hit a bump in my driveway.

Cheers,

A somewhat pessimistic Steve.

The seals won't affect the static sag (basically how soft the springs are).
Assuming you're not a fat bastard Wink the springs could be shagged.

I'd suggest refilling with the correct quantity of oil and taking it for a spin to see what it's like.

Just under 130cc of 10w fork oil, then replace the seals?

And I'm assuming fit dust seals whilst I'm at it, as I'll need them regardless of if I've got gaiters?

And I only weigh 9 stone so my weight shouldn't have much of an impact.

If youve got proper gaiters fitted tightly then theres no need for a dust seal, infact its easier to put the gaiters on properly without. When you get the forks apart check the guide bushes top and bottom, if theyre worn out then replacing the seals without replacing the bushes will give you about a week before it starts leaking again.

Cheers
John

Ahh I see, cheers John.

Will cable ties suffice for 'tightly fitting gaiters'? As this is what was keeping them on prior to me removing them to have a look what was going on.

yeah, cableties are just the thing you need.

Oh and by the way, gaiters that are secured instantly means your bike cannot fail its MOT on leaking suspension unless theres visible drips down the fork leg, neither can it fail for pitted fork legs. The tester cannot legally remove anything secured to the bike.

Cheers

Awesome man thanks.

It's one thing after another with this bike.

Gave it a quick look over again last night (about 11pm, so it was dark) and had it running, only to notice that the speedo isn't backlit?

They're supposed to be aren't they? Is this an mot fail?

My current earnings of £12 a week, (public transport fee's for NVQ, but I cycle) until I get a full time placement, mean it's going to be a hell of a long time until this thing's on the road Sad.

Cheers,

A mildly unhappy Steve

eh?

Getting them out is the easy bit it is getting them in and ramming the bushes down IMO.

Yeah I'm definitely going to go with the bodge it approach mate, can't justify spending hefty amounts of money on it, will just sort the things that need sorting and see how I go from there.

Having said that, it's cost me a lot more than I anticipated, as from stories on here, I've gathered I could have picked an MOT'd and Tax'd bike up for a fair bit less, (albeit probably worse condition aesthetically).

Them puchs mate, bloody hell!

Bought a kickstart one for £25 from a friend who had it previously and seized it. It was 1976 if I remember correctly but could be mistaken. Unseized it and job was a good 'un.

Bought a 'pedal and pop' version of the same bike for £10 from another friend who had one sat in a barn which was in need of a throttle cable and the contact breaker points sorting out, that was all.

They both had plates on the frame stating something along the lines of 'max vehicle design speed 25mph' (or 29 or something silly I can't remember!).

Overall pretty weird little bikes (if you can call them that). Good for 25 - 30mph and just feel like a slightly heavier pushbike.

Cheap as chips to run aswell. They were both 50cc but if I remember right, I think they did them up to 108cc? Not too sure, never really looked into it.

Quick youtube search reveals they're quite interesting bikes when modified to some extent.

Cheers,

Steve.
