New HP laptop on windows 7
I note the fan runs continuously but there's an option to stop that in the Bios.
A bit of research suggests they've had problems with them overheating and made them always on by default quite recently.
It is a bit annoying but not awfully loud.
Worth changing to only come on when it's warm?

You can use this to keep an eye on the temperatures:
Speedfan

Are you sitting with it on your lap or on soft cushions? could be blocking an air intake vent.

It's on a bare table and it's so cool the draught from it is almost uncomfortable on your hand!
It seems like cooling overkill, which is why I wondered about changing the setting so it comes on and off when it's not working much, like now just online.
But you can imagine in a couple of years time it gets dusty and problems arise.

If they suffered overheating, slowing the fan down would be a bad idea.

Fans run all the time. They're not like car or bike fans that come on when needed, they run constantly and change speed accordingly. The fan can be stopped by unplugging it, but this will reduce the life expectancy of your laptop to under 1 minute.

A noisy fan is usually a dirty fan (dirt unbalances them and changes their shape), dirt will also make air flow less effective making faster fan speeds necessary.

this.

check your temps.
for reference, the fans in my acer laptop come on at 55c and go off when it hits 40c.

Check your temps, and if they're nice and low you can consider it. But i wouldn't mess with any option that simply turns the fans off / slower unconditionally. Because the time when it heats up the most is when you're probably doing something on it and not watching your temps!

What would be ideal, is something like "Q fan control" (if your laptop has it, or something equivalent) where you set a "target temperature", at which or under the fans are slowed, and above which the fans work full whack to reduce the temperature down to the target. And set the target temperature as low as you can (and certainly lower than the defaults), as the higher it is the less time your laptop will last (their design leaves them far more susceptible to dying and having short lives because of heat than desktops).

If you're finding it uncomfortable and noisy, then choose the other setting. As long as you're not using it on soft furnishings and the laptop is well ventilated then stop worrying about it. They all have thermal cut-outs so if it does happen to overheat you can just put it back to how it was originally.

What model is it?

Yeah core temp will be constant unless your at the south pole, or in a desert at mid day. But i see nothing there to indicate that the fact actually turns off. As far as i know when the speed control cable is disconnected the fan runs at minimal speed constantly, but it still runs.

Anyway, this is the shizz you want Wink

The fans in my HP DV7 stop also. Then come back on when it gets warm again.
Either that or they slow down and speed up. *shrug*
I also have the laptop sitting on a board with 3 fans in it to help with cooling as it gets awfully hot when i'm playing games etc.

My HP Netbook is running all the time streaming music to my Squeezeboxes and being an ftp server.

Its fans used to run permanently (temp was 80C+) until I removed the mesh covering the grills. It now runs more more quietly at around 55C.

Check for a bios update from the HP website.

It highly unlikely you have the latest bios on the laptop as it has prolly been sat in a warehouse for the past 6 months.

This may help resolve the issue.
