Bikes or scooter debate

I was out with the eldest today and a few Lambretta's passed. I told her they are terrible machines along with scooters and they should all go get proper bikes.

She then asked me if its a biker thing that we are all anti scooter. I informed her that lots of bikers are anti scooter and since back in the day it was mods against rockers and i fell more into the rocker catagory I'm doubly anti scooter.

So i thought I would put it to the BCF forum dwellers for their views

Scooters are fine. They fill a niche, and do what they do well. It's a style thing, and if you can't see what the appeal would be to other people, then take the blinkers off and admit that giving mods a kicking went out of fashion decades ago.

Personally I'd go for a bike over a scooter, any day.

However, it's each to their own.

Scooters are often cheap to run, cheap to maintain, cheap to buy, etc.

They make for good commuting machines for many people, including the otherwise everyday car driver, and many people prefer scooters over bikes for numerous reasons.

I don't dislike scooters, they're just not my thing.

If they enjoy riding scooters, or if they don't enjoy it, but made the choice to go for a scooter over a bike for whatever reason, fair play to them.

Makes no odds to me.

EDIT: Also, maybe I'd ought to add that I'm too young to remember this Mods and Rockers lark, but have heard it all from my old man. Therefore I suppose I don't really have any preconceived ideas about scooter riders.

Hmmm. This makes a perfect commuter, 25 miles to central London. Has also taken 2 people, tents and stuff, 200 miles to Glastonbury.

But it's also comparatively hopeless for Sunday mornings and trips to the races. Quite fun trying though.

I've never owned a scooter, though if I did get one, I'd have a classic pre-registration letter with b&w plates.


Also, when I'm older and can't throw my leg over cos my hips giving me gyp, I'll buy whatever the latest version of the Silver Wing is.

I've ridden a scooter for just over 2 1/2 years and I've slowly grown sick of the tinny sound of it, but hopefully I'll be upgrading to a 125 within the next few weeks.

I pulled in to the first lane and then I started to slow down.

And at the last minute realised it was a scooter. At which point I sped off.

I tried nodding (to non ped bois) and they never, ever nod back so I stopped I assume a lot of serious scooter riders only have them to get from A to B and know nothing of the biker code.

I understand ped bois could be compared to super bike riders doing 140mph in 30mph zones mowing down kittens, but I've never seen them so I'll stick to automatically thinking ped bois are tw@s I was once behind one in a car and I assume the kid was bored because he swerved around a central island thing onto on coming traffic, then went back into the correct lane - just for the craic I suppose

There will come a time in many biker's lives when they will, for various reasons find it impossible to get a leg over. When it happens the choices are simple, give up biking or get a step thru, what will you do? I chose the scooter option - better than 4 wheels or the bus!!!

Quite like old vespas. don't like ped charvs dicking about like complete tw@s. why do they CONSTANTLY have to turn around and look behind them while riding. like an exaggerated lifesaver every 5 seconds as if to say to their mate behind them "look, i have managed to not fall off this 50cc 4bhp BEAST while riding in a straight line! respect me" cocks.

Personally I find scooters abit boring to ride. gotta be geared or i'll be bored shitless around town
