Sorry for multiple postings, but I'm sure that there's more than a few on here who don't frequent the New Bikers sections, hence the double post:
I've been offered a Kawasaki Z1000 by a friend, 2007, 7k, £3800. Loads of extras. From what I can work out from eBay/Biketrader/MCN, it seems like a good deal, but is it a good idea for a first bike? Or will it thrash me half to death?

I'd have said any 1000cc four is too much for a newb. Personally I think a sports 600 is too much for most n00bs too...
I'd suggest a Hornet 600 or similar, much more manageable and much less likely to spit you off. People do say "It only goes as fast as you turn the throttle..." Yes, of course that is true, but it is when the survival reactions kick in and you either freeze up, chop the throttle or whatever that causes bad things to happen. People forget that a lot of what is involved in good riding is down to precise throttle control, and sometimes even something as silly as hitting a bump in the road can cause you to crack the throttle open a little more than you wanted to.
Seriously, forget the Z1000 and look for a Hornet, FZ6 or even a Z750.

Not exactly a rip snorting handful though the Z1000 is it?  Test ride it. If it feels too much, then it probably is.
*Edit; just seens its to be your first bike, not your first big bike. Maybe something a little smaller/lighter.

I can get insured on an '06 Z750 at 17 with 1 years ncb for £583 tpft.
That's only £200 more than my 125. I need to pass my test now  .

I had a go on a Z1000, felt slower then a sports 600 to be honest, I was actually disappointed in how slow it felt, as I've always liked the look of them.
I think it would make a decent first bike, there not massively quick, and there pretty easy to ride, a bit bland, but OK for a first bike.
