My ZZR is at the bike repair place after my crash but I'm expecting it to be a Cat. D.

To be honest I have been pretty happy with the ZZR (with the exception of the suspension, and to a lesser extent the brakes) and depending on the extent of the damage to the bike I will look at putting it back on the road so long as it can be done for less than £200 or so, plus whatever it costs to buy it back.

The thing is I rely on a bike to get to work and back every day so I need to have a few things lined up in-case the ZZR isn't going to be worth putting back on the road, in which case I will have to get a bike sorted in a matter of days, so I need to start looking now.

With two accidents to my name, even though both of them are non-fault, the insurance on a "proper" sports 600 has jumped up by enough to put me off one, which sucks as I would quite like a ZX6R J1, that will have to wait a few years now!

Bikes I am considering are:

Arrow ZZR600 - put off by the bad suspension on my one, that and the fact that I have already owned one Laughing Otherwise very happy, so If I can find one with sorted suspenders I think I would go for .
Arrow YZF600 Thundercat - 2nd gear issues?
Arrow RF600 - Don't know much about these.
Arrow CBR600f - Heard plenty of good things about these bikes, my Revere says more about Honda reliability then anybody else could, the perfect candidate, but something in my head says no, not sure why.
Arrow GSX600F - Just plain UGLY!

Those are the sort of bikes I am looking at and if any of them came at the right price I would seriously consider it.

Criteria are that it must be faired and can't be too sporty, or the insurance will rape me! I've got to use it every day to get to work and back so nothing unreliable of too high mileage

I've not got an exact budget at the moment, but we will call it £1000 - £1500 for the sake of this thread.

Any opinions on how the above bikes will compare to the ZZR and also any other suggestions to similar bikes that I have forgotten will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Conan

Are half fairings out of the question?

Kind of, I have a half faired bandit 650 at the moment and it is pretty windy, to be honest I didn't think it would make as much difference as it has.

What were you going to suggest?

That's just down to suzuki half assed attempt at making a faired bandit, i've heard people saying that it's almost worse than riding a none faired bike.

Avoid the GSX600F, no-one will take you seriously. Other than that, in the £1000 - £1500 range I'd say condition is more important than exactly what bike it is.

RF600's are getting on a bit, don't see many of them around. Wouldn't be top of my list due to availability of parts etc.

I guess this is the kind of money the OP is talking about. I'd buy an SV for that money personally, but that is just me.

Also consider a Triumph TT600, a Yamaha TRX850 (if you can find a decent one) and the obvious CBR600F.

I'd avoid the GSXF and the RF, because they are old and crap. I'd probably not turn my nose up at a decent Thundercat, but bear in mind they have very common 2nd gear issues. An older ZX6R would be a good buy too. Better handling than the ZZR and nearly as comfortable.

I really wanted a ZX6 but the insurance is a pain! Oddly the ZX7r insurance is cheaper, heard running costs can be a bit high on the 7r though?

Not overly keen on the suzuki's anyway so I will cross them off the list.

I do quite like the TT600, anybody owned one and got anything to say about them? Heard fueling can be an issue, first ever FI bike IIRC?

Has it really effected your insurance that much?

I am a similar age and insure a TDM900 and Speed Four for £550 that's doing unlimited mileage on the TDM and 4000 on the S4.

I have 6 points, one no fault and one 50/50 claim. Even after having the no fault claim my insurance still went down.

That's with 2NCB

I have 3NCB but it has still put it up by around £200, enough to make the difference between the full on sports bikes and the watered down/touring versions.

I'm with KGM at the moment, they may let me change to something sportier, they gave me a pretty decent quote for a ZX7r.

Depending on what I get through the insurance claim I may look at something sportier anyway and just pay out the extra on the insurance.

How much will having a Cat. D against a bike effect it's value once it's been repaired?

Also chris how much was the Speed four, depsite the lack of fairing I find myself very tempted Laughing

running costs on a 7r aren't any different really than on a sports 6?

Has a bit more torque and power than a 6 so may chew tyres and chain/sprockets a little quicker but wont be much i the long run

I used to get 38mpg before i fitted a -1 front sprocket and thats gone down to 35, so fuel consumption is a little worse than a 6, but not distastrously so.

i love my 7r, its one of the best looking bikes of its time imo, but is heavier than comparable bikes (no issue to me personally except for manouvering it around the garage), very stable and awesome on the road.

highly reccomended by me Thumbs Up

Not read the whole thread, but may I suggest an SV650s?

A friend of mine has one, and it's not bad for what it is. It's fully faired and not a sports sports bike, if that makes sense?

He rides it every single day and has so far not had any fundamental reliability issues (well, none at all that I can think of, actually).

Can quite readily be picked up for your stated budget.

Just my two cents mate,

Steve.

Not sure this is going to sound right but i'm worried that an SV650 will feel a little slow compared to the ZZR, lacking 20 - 30 bhp compared, rarely use the bike to its potential but it's nice to know its got the extra there when I want it.

Well I had two TT600's and a Speed Four, and there is a slight fuelling glitch at low revs, but its so tiny you'd be hard pressed to notice it. I had a 2002 TT with the latest cams and mapping, and it was pretty nice to ride.

They are good value for what they are TBH. They are reasonably light, comfortable quick enough for most people, and they handle excellently.

Understand where you're coming from mate, fair play!

Aforementioned friend of mine is on 33bhp restriction so I suppose the loss in ponies makes bugger all odds Laughing

Cheers,

Steve

That glitch either is different from bike to bike or some people ride it at low revs all the time, I know some people who say it is a massive problem for me it isn't as I don't use those revs I wouldn't pull away at less than 4k anyway.

Insurance is suprisingly cheap on the TT600! If I get nearer the £2000 mark I think that is what I will go for, there is a very nice one on on ebay, black and yellow, X reg - 2000, 7,000 miles or something equally low.

Sounds nice to me Mr. Green
