hey guys new to the forum.

recently got a 2007/8 Kawasaki zx6r ninja. and i think its about time to start personalizing to my liking.
i was wondering what after market goodies people have tired and tested, or if giving the money what people would buy.

one of the down sides of my ninja is she is a little bit heavy compared to the rest of the super sports class from that year, so weight saving is as important as power gains.
i don't really have a price range, in the sense that if the performance to money ratio is justifiable then i will save and buy it

iv been told the usual stuff like slip on's etc, which is more sound and looks then performance to my understanding.
i was more wondering if there was any thing i haven't thought of ?
iv just got a new pair of Michelin ct2, and my suspension set up
and was thinking of maybe a power commander V

any advice would be appreciated, cheers lads

Where is the stop eating pies option to reduce the weight Laughing

What are you planning on using the bike for ? Track days etc or just general riding.

As most of your listed mods are not going to be cheap and not really produce much more bang per buck.

Only one that really stands out is braided lines, at least they help to stop you....

Wink Thumbs Up ,

iv heard good things about the PCV, even on stock bikes, as the fuelling is a compromise out of the factory.

sort your handling before adding power, as a modern 600 is plenty quick enough for most on the road.
modifications are all subjective to how good the bike is in the 1st place.

the 2007 ninja 6 is a bit of a big boned girl, and tall gearing and not much low down grunt make it fell gutless at times

some cheap mods to try ;
down gearing may help with the lack of low down, you will probably need a speedo healer though.
and losing the cat will release a bit of power and drop a few lbs or two,

You want a weight saving try taking a dump before you get on the bike, seriously unless you are Valentino Rossi you aren't going to notice dropping weight on the bike. Can you tell the different between full an empty tank? I can just about, but bearing in mind that is over 20K. to lose that weight you will have to spend serious money.

Power commanders are good they smooth out the fuelling, cans also make good noise.

exhaust, power commander and gearing would have the most effect on a bang for buck basis. Steering dampener would be pointless unless u were having issues?

the bikes used for the road. got another ninja track bike.
and do you think on a 2008 bike i will need braided lines already? since the rubbers ones are not that old yet ?

yeah i can feel the difference between a full and near empty tank,
my track bike is a 636 ninja, that is a some what lighter, and i can feel the difference when swapping between the bikes,
i was hoping their was some cheap ways of shedding a few lbs here and there Crying or Very sad

The first thing I would have suggested would have been suspension refresh and set up. The suspension is already pretty good as far as I've heard, but you could upgrade to something after-market, if you felt the need. But being just a road bike, with no intentions of serious track use, it will be all but wasted.

Seeing as you've already set the suspension... Get a full system, something light. Then a K&N, Power Commander then get it down to a dyno place.

Braided hoses are a nice cheap mod, and will make the brakes feel sharper. Or maybe it is the fact the fluid is being renewed. But I like mine.

Other things to consider; Lighter brake discs, lighter sprockets, lighter chain. The less unsprung weight should help it turn a bit quicker

i was thinking about some ktec springs and a ohlin shock, but i thought that might be over the top for the road. even though some times i think the bump management could be better. or maybe thats becuase i weigh a lot more then your average euro racer Laughing

i quite like the stock petal disk, but if there are lighter items id look in to it, do you know what brands make the lighter chains, brakes and sprockets?

I hear carbon fibre wheels are all the rage at the minute, that should shed a bit of weight Laughing

I don't find I need more than stock suspension for modern sports bikes on the road - I don't ride that fast.

Personally though, I wouldn't really bother spending much on a road sports bike to improve it - again, adequate enough for me.

A full titanium system is going to cost, but especially with a cat, you should lose quite a reasonable amount.
If you're not going to take pillions, should be able to get a custom race-style ali rear subframe and use a race hump with some lightweight LED lights.

Can probably take some stuff off the front - if you don't need the (I presume) decent lights, could scoop most of the front stuff out and get a lighter light unit.

I don't bother for trackdays, but for raicng I would make sure my fuel level was pretty low - basically as low as I can get away with.
As you note, it's a decent few kg, so if going out for shorter rides you could always just not fill it up as much - it's hassle, but then a load less than the hassle for most to earn the money to buy just a small bit of carbon fibre Smile.

No, you won't need them. Brake hoses are not constructed out of rubber anyway, their metal fibre core is just coated with it for protection.

yeah thats what i meant. i was going to get a set of braided lines, and i often see they are a common mod. but i not sure if they would make a difference if mine are not that old so shouldn't be flexing or absorbing much moisture ?

G wrote:

yeah, thats why i thought the expensive shocks and stuff might be to much for the road

iv never thought of that, im likely going to add another bike to the fleet, maybe a drz400sm or a naked, so i probably wont need the pillion seat.
really like that idea cheers

what is there to lose from the front?

This amuses me.

You say you want to personalise it to your liking, then ask what you should be putting on it. Wink

In answer to the question you asked, put on whatever you like most.

In answer to the question I think you really want answering, if it were mine I'd just bung a can on it, possibly braided lines and a PCV if I could be arsed.

I think the best thing you can do to any bike is put fuel in the tank and ride it.

New Age Ninja wrote:

Don't bother. Lighter items = less material = less time until replacement.

Most chain makers do 520(I think your chain's 525 or 530 pitch) pitch chain and sprockets (or race chains). It's they're slightly lighter, but wear out faster. Racers mainly use them because of the increased choice of gearing.

I really wouldn't read too much in being able to "feel" the difference in weight when swapping between bikes. It's not the change in weight you're noticing. It's where the weight is situated making it "feel" much lighter. i.e. put the heavy bits of the bike near to the ground, then it'll feel lighter even if it is actually heavier.

If you're going to start going down the suspension route I'd advise getting a used race shock, and 20mm fork cartridges + springs from a racer(Ktec 20mm cartridges are meant to be awesome, although Ohlins are also ok), then get them refreshed and resprung to suit you.

If money is no object, then a full exhaust system (akrapovic etc) will yeild a decent power increase and save a load of weight. You'll need a power commander and an hour on the dyno to set it up.

Carbon wheels should save some weight and totally change the handling. Maybe better to buy a different bike though...

fair point, but its a forum where people ask for advice... so... well thats what i did. of course its my bike, im not asking you to personally come round with a demon tweaks catalogue and build my bike for me, just asking advice on what works, whats isn't worth the money, mods that i may not have thought off etc

wouldn't the newer bike have better mass distribution?

Not necessarily. Wink

Newer doesn't always = better.

K7 GSXR1000 was widely considered a step backwards from the K5 for example.

New Age Ninja wrote:

Usual suspects, ebay, pistonheads, forums etc.

The cartridges go into the forks themselves. They provide the damping force. As for the costs, they are more expensive than springs, but obviously not as much as a new set of forks.

I wouldn't waste your money.

Yes you can get more power, but unless you're racing it and it's tuned to the tits there's very little point.

Quick action throttle... this will be a must mod on any bike i buy in future... specify the shortest tube.. for 'Active' brand this is size 44...

i thought i would be in 'highside' city when i first fitted it but but if anything it gives more control on slowish corners and going flat out is a pleasure... blip, blip, blip and you're red lining all the way Laughing

Would also always fit a steering damper as a must... this could save you from shitting your leathers some day Confused

For a more cosmetic view, get some of those Hong kong knock off Pazzoi levers off ebay.. look the biz ... and no bike is complete without gold pre-load adjusters Razz
