Theres a fiver for you. It is sterling and is legal tender over here but many places wont accept it in the same way lots of places wont accept scottish notes.
Its a Northern Ireland plastic 5 pound note. ____________________ illuminateTHEmind wrote: I am just more evolved than most of you guys... this allows me to pick of things quickly which would have normally taken the common man years to master

I seem to remember something about Scottish fivers actually having value as the issuing banks had to prove they have the funds to back it up, whereas the Bank of England can just print what they like and it has value "because they say so". ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. Hi
Technically it isn't legal tender in any country (it is a promissory note). Bank Of England notes are only legal tender in England and Wales.
From memory in Scotland nothing is strictly speaking legal tender anymore. The last thing that was legal tender in Scotland was the £1 note.
As I understand it nobody is under any obligation to accept Scottish or NI notes.
All the best

So...
HSBC are aiming for the pikey demographic?
I remember working in an amusement arcade being asked by English people if we accepted the new 50p peices when the switched to the wee dinky ones, I said we did but they were only worth 42p in Scotland.
Had a few complaints about it but I pointed out they still got 50p's worth of credit on any machine...
£5 notes aren't worth anything these days anyway, I throw more at a dog if I haven't got a stone.

More likely to come across one of these than the £500,000 note
Would have to refuse it if anybody tried to pay with one in my shop though, our banking paperwork only goes up to £50's
Never have any issue with people paying with a £50, nobody fakes them anyway since everybody checks them. Have caught some pretty reasonable looking fake £20's in the past though, if they had tried to use it with other notes (i.e. tried to pay for £100 worth of stuff with 5 x £20 one of which is fake) I probably wouldn't have noticed.
It's funny when people try to pay with a fake note and then get all pissed off when I refuse (legally not allowed to) to give it back. ____________________ I am a bellend, I am a man of constant sorrow, I am a gummy bear, I am a rock. |

We had a few fake notes in (at the arcade again) We use to return them to the customer. We took the view that the law is one thing, needlessly getting a kicking was quite another.
They probably went over the road and spent it at the bar but as long as it wasn't coming through my door, I didn't care.

I wouldn't tell a customer that a note is fake without having it in my hands, on a genuine note there is raised writing in various places and extremely small print (on a new £20 see the rings in the queens eyes and take a good look at the swirls at the bottom right of the note for good examples of the small details) both of which would be impossible to tell without the note in my hands. Therefore I would be passing it on by giving it back.
You are right by the way, I wouldn't accept the word of anybody telling me my notes are fake without some sort of proof. Luckily with a till full of legitimate notes it takes less than 30 seconds of pointing out flaws compared to the real thing for the person to realise its a fair cop and give up trying to argue it.
I have never had a customer who seems genuinely surprised that a note is a fake, they normally just want to get out of the shop as soon as they realise it has been faked.
The opportunities for an innocent person to have a fake note on them are pretty limited, they wont have got it from a bank, I very much doubt any big retailer would attempt to give a fake note out as change, I know we wouldn't. Perhaps a corner shop may try and shift one as change, or maybe they got it through selling something for cash and being given a fake note like that. But the large majority of people paying with fake notes have bought those fake notes in a deliberate attempt to rip the high street retailer off.
If somebody really thinks I am trying to rip them off I have no problem to taking them across the way to Halifax and have them verify that the note is not genuine.
I might have some sympathy if it was for food and the person couldn't afford to feed the family otherwise, but we sell what can only be described as generally pretty expensive, non-essential, tat To be honest the notes are not particularly cheap either, I got offered some £20's at £7 per note, or £5 if I bought a certain amount. At four times the value I can see why it may be tempting, I can't see the success rate of the notes being more than 75% though. ____________________ I am a bellend, I am a man of constant sorrow, I am a gummy bear, I am a rock. |
