I have decided that I am moving away from Banbury, and I have also decided that I much prefer people who live in Sheffield or further north.

The UK is my oyster, and my options are unlimited, so can anyone recommend me some nice towns to move to?

Must be:
Arrow Near some nice countryside
Arrow Somewhere with at least a half decent nightclub, or a city nearby
Arrow Quite a lefty place if possible.

Basically, I really like Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire, it has all of these things in abundance, but if I can't get work there I need some back-up.

Scotland is definitely an option, but not much further north than Dundee if possible.

Thanks Smile

Yorkshire's a big place, there a few bits of it I really don't like too. Not saying the North is perfect, just that it's better than the south, except for Devon/Cornwall.

As a Yorkshire lad living in the South (near Brighton) I can confirm that the general populous of the South (Southerners) are:

Backstabbing, Sarcastic, Unreliable, Status Obsessed Arseholes.

People up North are generally more friendly and it's a nicer place to live. I cannot wait to move back!

I have southern mates who always say that they prefer northern people because they are more friendly and they enjoy the night life up north more because you can talk to random people without them looking at you like you are some sort of loon.

(I am speaking in general terms here, there are exceptions to the rules - like the people I hang about with around here)

Found it completely the opposite way round - moved up to Leeds for 4 months into my dream job (all bar it was the wrong end of the country) and hated every minute of it.

Fair enough - you asked for it Very Happy

1) Everyone said Yorkshire was beautiful and it is, if you get out of the cities, which are awful. Leeds is a classic example of how not to build a city - has none of the mystery of London, none of the architecture and a one way system that baffles me still to this day that you can be caught in it for a half hour at a time. Bradford - who on earth wants to go through that? Strewth. Down south may not have the dramatic landscapes of the country parks but the day to day stuff is far more pleasant.

2) First word anyone spoke to me in Leeds was a bird walking down Headrow asking me if I could spare her some money for a bus and "we could work something out" - FFS girl, that desperate? Good or bad thing depending on your position.

3) The accent - for God sake, it doesn't take 15 seconds to ask if I'm alright - you don't have to say "you allllrrrriiiiiiiiieeeet?" with a whine in your voice. More to the point, when I ask the question, a simple yes would be fine - no need to tell me about your hepatitis and its complicated medication.

4) The wages suck compared to the south, and the house prices anywhere you'd want to live are not proximate to this suckineth.

5) The people just aren't that friendly - period. Everyone builds up this whole northern ethos of talking to people in the street but the truth is no-one in a northern city speaks to the next bloke - the people walking their dogs in the peaks probably do, but in the city they walk on regardless just the same as in London - apart from they're far less accepting of outsiders, so I'm from Essex go up there and speak in Estuary English and you're not welcome in their country pub, despite the fact you're living round the corner. I also saw more fights, drunken toss and spitefulness in 3 months of inner city Leeds than I've seen in 10 years of being in London. Admittedly there's the living above it, being part of it argument and I won't deny that I'm glossing it over somewhat.

6) The public transport is a fucking joke. January last year - I could move from Exeter to Essex no problem on the trains but I couldn't go from Leeds to Doncaster without a fucking taxi. That's just terrible. You lot are supposed to have the shittiest of the weather so when it does come along, you should able to bloody deal with it.

There's far more reasons - but I'd just be going forever. Simply put, I like more of the south than I'll ever like of the north and I dare say there will be someone out there that'll be the direct polar opposite.

I can see your point, and granted - some things are true.

I know southern people who live up north (north yorkshire) who absolutly love it and would never go back and talk about how shit the people are (generally) down here.

Big cities are generally all the same but I do find the northern ones more friendly but then I am not a Southerner in the North.

Most people down here rip into me a lot for being Northern but it is all good humor... that or I am too stupid to realise they are really taking the piss.

I'm originally from Leceister. I lived in Yorkshire for a fair while when I was a bit younger and now live in Lincolnshire, in a village near Grimsby.

I must say, I do like Lincolnshire. Very rural but never too far from a town/city.

I'm anything but a people's person so I can't really vouch for how friendly people are here but I've found they're alright.

The only thing you've got to look out for is Warped.

Oh, and tractors.

Cheers,
Steve

Bristol. Haven't met one person who hasn't loved living here.

It's expensive, but has everything you could ever want. Beaches to the south, lovely countryside to the west in Wales, London is only 2 hours tops away. The nightlife is awesome and of course the architecture (transport) isn't bad either thanks to Mr Brunel.

The reason Southerners are pricks (I'm sure I've posted this here in the past)...

I had a training course in Windsor a few years back and had to get the train from Kings Cross to Egham. The signage at Kings Cross was a bit confusing, so when a train came in I asked a guy getting on if this was the train that went to Egham

"No idea mate" he said in his coker-er-knee accent, but I thought I would risk it and hopped on the train anyway.

A few stops later the train pulls into Egham station, and what do I see, but said same Southern twat getting off at that stop.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why Southerners are a bunch of arseholes.

(no offence)

Lincoln is nice. Not a hole in any way as far as I can tell.

Leeds isn't nice though. I've been spending a lot of time there lately and yes its missing a lot that you seem to get down south. However, comparing it to london is like comparing having your testicles electrocuted or hit with a hammer. Both are shit and you'd sell your mother not to experience either IMO.

If anybody comes on here and says "London is great..." they are deluded or lying pure and simple. I've noticed the only people who sing the praises of London are people who have never lived anywhere else.

Outside of London the south isn't too bad on the whole.

Haha. One of my colleagues is from Bristol and he hates it. He says its full of sink estates and the chavs there are more chavvy than chavs elsewhere. They'll steal your mother soon as look at you. To me Bristol sounds like Cardiff and Swansea except with English chavs instead of Welsh chavs.

Sure, its got a bit of history, and a bit of engineering behind it but just like London, its all a nice facade to a nasty underbelly.
