PS3 queries.

Right, you gaming gurus you.

I'm intrigued by the homebrew possibilities of the new PS3 jailbreak that's doing the rounds and now looking at buying one. A tad confused by the "fat", "slim" and so forth. A few questions:

1) Any pros or cons between the models.
2) How difficult is an HDD upgrade on the PS3.
3) I'll probably look around the second hand market first, any problems to lookout for and what sort of price range should one expect?

Old fat models are starting to drop regularly now with dead blu ray lens's and yellow light (similar to the 3 red lights of the 360).


The slim machine seems to be better and we haven’t seen as many faulty ones in the shop. The slim ones also do bitstream output so if your well in to your home av these are the models to go for.

As for hard drive swaps, VERY easy, as in a few screws and that’s it.

As for the jailbreak stuff... waiting to see how this all pans out when new Sony updates come out etc.

PS3 jailbreak sounds dodgy a fuck, i wouldnt go anywhere near online with it, but i guess you be a tard to put any hacked console online.

I heard the jailbreak didnt actually work.

Hmmm, probably slim then given the rest of the AV setup.

Not bothered about updates/online play to be honest, the main thing that interests me is the homebrew aspect. There's already an XBMC port underway.

"jailbreak" is running, can't speak as to backup/copies (not working afaik) but unsigned code is enabled. A few of the devs on another forum I frequent have just successfully ported it to the phone I use.

Basically I'm after a cheapish Blueray/Media player and with the option of homebrew it's sounding like the PS3 is a contender.

Ours is used mostly for blu rays and streaming music.

I have them all (PS3/360/wii) and dont play games much, but the PS3 is on the most out of them all and is used mostly for non games stuff.

Would be good to see a homebrew PLEX, XBMC setup with multiformat support onboard storage, maybe voice control using google voice?

I woundt go online with it but if its a case of remove the usb key, psp etc then yeah I will try it out.

My PS3 has been on standby for a couple of months now
