Long story short, I have toothache.Right now it's bearable, but at some point tonight I will probably wake up in agony as I have done every night for the last week, Only dentist that can see me can't get me in for another week and emergency dentist wont do anything as I'm already registered with a dentist. As I type this I know what I'm about to say is absoloutley retarded and isn't really a good idea, but in a few hours the only thing I will be wanting to do is yank the bastard out, I get closer to doing it each night but bottle it every time,I'm not worried that I'll obviously have a tooth missing and I'll look a twat for a week, I'm worried that I might pull the wrong one out and it will hurt so bad that I wont have the balls to pull the right one after.

The tooth I suspect is causing the problem is one I chipped when I faceplanted the floor on my bmx years ago,had it repaired as it caused an absess, then broke it again a few year later, even when it was repaired I was still getting the absess every year, thing is the tooth next to it causes more pain when i tap it.

If I do decide to pull it myself, do I pull the chipped one, or the one next to it that hurts more? Do I use pliers and just force it out or should I try working it out with my fingers(don't know if this would work have no idea how strong teeth are planted in)? Will the pain go once it's out,and will the absess just go on it's own? and lastly, whats the worst that could happen?

Probably not the best place to ask for dental advice I know, and I'm sure I'll get a few "man the fuck up and pull it" comments but I dare say somebody on here will have done it before, and if so, did it hurt?

Get a pair of pliers or mole grips, make sure they've got a good grip on the tooth and then just force it out.

BCF is full of qualified experts so it's the best place to ask serious questions. Thumbs Up

Yes the pain will go once the tooth is out. Yes the abscess will go on it's own. The worst that could happen is you manage to damage a major artery and end up bleeding to death, so don't go damaging any major arteries or veins!!

Have you got a web cam?

Yes it hurts, but only for a few minutes compared to several days of suffering. Not sure pulling the tooth will remove the pain, I think the abscess is causing the discomfort which is why its spread through several teeth.

To the best of my knowledge the dentist won't do anything until the abscess has cleared, usually through taking antibiotics. I'm surprised the emergency doctor didn't give you any.

Don't pull what could be a saveable tooth.
Dentists hate doing that.

Call the dentist, make an appointment to have it looked at, but mention to the receptionist that you are certain its infected, and ask would it be possible to get a prescription for some antibiotics before you see the dentist.

So does skunk Laughing

To be fair, before it gets to the "only skunk will do" stage, I tend to try and knock the pain out a bit with equal amounts of paracetamol and aspirin.

(and clove oil, oh how I love the smell of clove oil, LOL)

They're "different kinds" of painkillers, so one (paracetamol) works on your brain to say "It doesn't really hurt" and the aspirin (apparently) works on the nerve endings at the site of the pain to convince them that it doesn't hurt (and also to reduce inflammation which is being caused by the infection).

Well ...that's what I've convinced myself of over the years, and it usually works for me.

With the aid of pliers and beer I have pulled a tooth. Because the tooth was broken and pliers not actually being a dentists tool and me not being a dentist it just broke the tooth off and left the root in. The pain stopped instantly and I was pain free for several years before I had to get a dentist to extract the root.

Man up and do it. Mr. Green

Emergency dental clinics are wankers! Had one refuse to see me when I got stuck in Tunbridge Wells last winter because I wasn't from the area, even though I was stuck in the area and had a bad abscess.

With pulling the tooth, give them a wiggle with your finger first, if it is going to be an easy one to pull out it will have quite a bit of movement, remember when you were a kid and had loose teeth? You can feel the base of the tooth coming clear of the gum with your tongue. Wouldn't want to pull a tooth myself otherwise.

There is a dentist on here because he gave me advise via PM when I had an abscess, I think it was suitor_stu or something like that.

I'm off to get a molar pulled tomorrow. Big fucking deal. It's been broke in half for a year (snapped it in Spain a year ago eating pork scratchings...or chicken itchings, I forget which, they're weird in Spain) and it's just started causing offence - I think the root is starting to rot, so it's a bit clungey...time to go, never mind, I'll have 'em replaced with someone elses...

Marki-the emergency dentist wont see me as I already have a dentist, so dont really understand why we actually have an emergency dentist.

Ste-webcam stopped working ages ago, you serious about the main arteries thing?

HK-I really don't think I can stick another week of it(which is the earliest appointment i can get), I don't want my 2 front teeth missing but with a baby screaming for a feed every 3hr and toothache on top I'm really missing my sleep

doggone-how well does it work, better than bonjela, ibuprofen, teething powder and some liquid anasthetic that numbs everything bar the bit that hurts?do i just rub it onto the gum?
would probably work better if I just got bladdered on it but then I'd have hangover, which is almost as bad

Drink it I meant, but holding some in your mouth will speed the effect.
You don't need to get pished, just a mouthful or two will deaden most pains for a few hours.

A mate at work cracked a tooth and is in loads of pain with it.

Went to ordinary DR. and explained the situation and they gave him some strong pain killers and antibiotics. I think he said it's alright now.

(he got quoted over a week for an appointment aswell)

Thumbs Up Didn't think of that one, as it was caused through a broken tooth I just assumed it would be a job for the dentist, will call DR in morning and see if they can atleast sort the abscess

just take about 800mg of ibroprohen regularly an the pain will go.

in addition use clove oil, it stinks, tastes like shit but work.

and see a dentist, you have an appointment, if its that bad the dentist should see you, normally mentioning pain gets you one of their "spare" slots

Source a green sharp and spike it yourself. Might smell a it, but it will ease the pressure.

Ibuprofen 500 are very good for toothache (big pink things [oo-er]). Do you have a friend with some? They're prescription only AFAIK.

Don't pull the tooth, it may be the wrong one or saveable.

Additionally, you may have further problems, for example the tooth not wanting to come out (mine didn't, and had to be drilled and split). Or you may damage the gum out of frustration etc.

I payed out for root canal with my last abscess, the best part of £300 even on the NHS.

I still have the abscess, it doesn't hurt the tooth any more, but it has come back through on the roof of my mouth, I can feel it aching further up my face sometimes too. Worrying stuff when you think what it has probably done to the insides of my face!

Got another abscess at the moment, this one is getting pulled whether they say it is save-able or not, the first one wasn't worth the money Thumbs Down

Demand penicillin off your dentist or if that fails go to your Dr and do the same.
I get the occasional abscess and get drugs on demand from the dentist with no examination. You are a biker, start to look the part and get drugs without stupid questions.

Some good advice already in the thread, not all of it mind you but I'll quickly summarise;

Don't try to pull your own fucking tooth out.

I'll expand on this a little;

You'll more than likely (unless like c_dug said the whole thing is pretty loose and the gum has receded around it) just snap the top part off, which may allow some drainage of an abscess on the tooth (if that's what's causing your pain) but will more than likely leave a fair chunk of root under the gum, causing you more bother in the long run when you have to get your gum pulled back and bone drilled to remove the broken bit of root (as I've seen and done on others!). And that's not taking into account the issues with sticking non sterile/sterilised things into your mouth and the possible damage to other tissues/blood vessels etc etc.

Best option is to take some doses of Ibuprofen (unless you've got stomach ulcers or really bad asthma). As mentioned above, you can take between 400-800mg ibuprofen up to 3 times per day. I stress though that 800mg 3 times per day is the absolute maximum you should take (so check other meds you may be taking don't contain it), and I wouldn't be doing that for much longer than you have to. Don't worry about getting it on prescription - 500mgs tabs prescription only, but 3x200mg tabs do the same job and can be bought over the counter. Ibuprofen is the best for dental pain, and it has an anti inflammatory thing too, so tends to calm that side a little more. However the best it's going to do is take the edge off it.

Have no idea what your system is like down there, but up here we're obliged to offer you an appointment within a few hours if you have facial swelling or have had trauma, within a 24-48hrs in pain and within a week for a fractured tooth (and I will stress that the 'offer you' bit is important, it may be at an unsuitable time for you but I'm sure you can understand that we don't have a totally open book so if it's that bad you have to make do). Generally speaking the emergency dentists only see people who are unregistered because your normal dentist should offer to see you based on the situations above, but you never know - some people are just cunts...we try and see everyone the same day the call if we can (even if it's just 5mins) but you don't half get it in the ear when someone 'cant make it for then' and suddenly it's your fault - if it's that painful surely you can find the time?! Anyway I'm rambling...

Instructions;
1) Dont take it out yourself
2) Take Ibuprofen
3) Phone dentist tomorrow morning as soon as they open and see if they have any cancelations, if they don't ask them to phone you if they get one (we always get at least 1-2per day)

Hope this helps, but feel free to PM me if you want any more info.

Fair enough but you got to remember it's like any form of surgery - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. There's a handful of factors that contribute to it's success (one of them being how long the infection has had to take hold...)

Okay, only just re-read this part. Could very well NOT be the broken tooth causing the bother (doubly so if they're your front teeth and they got a knock - a knock can sever/strangle the blood supply to a tooth without damaging the tip of it but it takes years for the nerve to die in this case) so I would STRONGLY recommend doing piss all to either till you let someone have a look.

Sorry if I sound harsh, but to me this is akin to someone in the workshop section asking 'I think one of the calipers on my front break isn't working - should I cut the other caliper's line to see if I'm right?'
