PostPosted: 13:16 - 07 Sep 2010    Post subject: Misplaced Licence, Job Requires it... Reply with quote

Im supposed to be starting a new delivery job tonight, and i was asked to bring in my passport and licence, fair enough.

A little while ago i lost my wallet with the photocard in it, i havent applied for the replacement yet partially because i have been too poor to pay the 20 pound. On accepting the job i wrongly assumed i knew where the paper counterpart is, it seems i dont, i have torn up the house looking everywhere for it.

Im going to get both replacements ordered today online/post office and just pay up, but i have the problem of this new job wanting to see it, and im not going to have one now for at least 2 weeks.

I know i am stupid for getting myself in this situation, but is there anything that i can do to prove i have a full licence to a boss? I will go there regardless, take all my other bikes docs and ride there on my 600, and pray to every diety that he looks the other way for the next two weeks, but i wouldent blame him if he needed to see it.

Any suggestions?

/facepalm

Phone the DVLA and see what they say.

Maybe you can get something from one of their centres.

Can you not call the DVLA in front of him give permission for him to speak to them about you and have them tell him your entitlements?

Cool, hope it goes well, bear in mind 0906 is premium rate and can be upto £1.50 per minute, maybe more from a mobile.

Still, its defo worth a few minutes call if it means you can start work two weeks earlier, good luck with it Thumbs Up

Pizza hut will let you do it on just a cbt and it's on their little twist and go scooter.

They'll even put some people through a CBT (and an additional day's training) and then let them do it. The bike is an awful cheap 50cc scooter (restricted to boot), just to warn you. And the brakes only work on alternate tuesdays Thumbs Up

95% of all pizza delivery riders will only have a CBT, but being that i passed my test something like 4 years ago my CBT will be expired, so i have a full licence.

Generally speaking chain restaurants will provide the bike and insurance and your little independants might want you to have your own. Dont use your own bike, but yes all of the pizza bikes are shitand falling apart to improve profit for the shop...

Also consider something, the experience of delivering pizza will generally be affected by two things, who you work for and where.

Working for pizza hut in a shit area will see you on a 50cc and delivering to all the local scum, because lets face it rich people dont order from pizza hut, so also less tips.

Whereas work for a posh(ish) shop in a nice/gentrified area will mean your clientelle will be stupid yuppie/bohemian types who wont try to rob you, and possibly will tip, but do expect an attitude of superiority from some.

I think its better to work for a smaller company just because you dont have to wear those horrible pizzahut/dominoes suits which are a massive target for chav attacks.

On a side note how fucking weird are the semi-auto innovas, no clutch just feels strange...

I have had no problems wearing all my own gear for Pizza Hut. Apart from a few giggles from the managers that i looked like a crazy ninja in my full textiles Laughing (i was half-expecting issues when i applied though, but maybe my local one is more chilled or something?)

They're bloody odd bikes aye, especially odd in that they take 2 full seconds to respond to throttle "on". I mean, come on!

i might have to apply for a job at a pizza place then!

i have been a delivery driver before just always in a car, i didnt actually think places still had scooters for you to use.

i take it insurance is all sorted through them and there is no cost to me if i break/crash the scooter?

Insurance/petrol etc cost you zip at Pizza Hut, after all it's their bike. No idea for other firms, and of course it'd be different for owner/drivers.
No charges for damage either at Pizza Hut. An exception being i'm sure i heard of a guy charged when he wrecked 3 tyres in a month at a different location. Thinking about it though, i'm not aware Dominoes use bikes at all, at least that's what they tell me every time i state interest in working for one of their locations!

Obviously if you take the pee i'm sure they reserve the right to (and legally speaking employers are allowed to take 10% gross of your monthly pay for any damage you cause to them through outright negligence/neglect). A previous guy wrote off a couple of scooters in a very short space of time before being sacked and i never heard of him being charged (not that i can confirm for sure he wasn't).

Congrats on the job mate!

Used to deliver pizza and chinese back in the day.

The now wife and I were saving for our house and ended up doing the pizza 2 nights a week and chinese 3 nights a week....

Obviously done it in the car, as I'm only learning to ride now but it makes such a difference having someone with you to run in and out and sort change etc as you drive along.

Obviously I still went to the door if it was a dodgy area or whatever but never had any issues.

put on a ton of weight with all the free food too!

The money was great but had to hit it on the head as it was too much with us both working full time too, felt like we had no life.....but it got us in our house so can't complain!

£6/hour. 20p per drop (but you have to call customers with your own mobile phone because no one seems to ever answer their door despite having ordered pizza Neutral , and you don't get any extra allowance for that, so many people on PAYG will find this obliterates the drop bonus). 15p per order you take via the ordering system so that's the easiest way to up the wage a bit - if the damn reception boy doesn't leap in for it first! Wink
Free 9" pizza each shift, restricted to 2 toppings and no chicken as a topping.
Staff discount 50% on everything but customers can often get this themselves with vouchers and you can't combine staff bonus with any other discount.

If you ignore the fact you're risking life and limb for it, it's not too bad though - very good bunch of people at my local (which is probably what makes or breaks the experience), good laughs, and the occassional bit of additional free food when something is made wrong Very Happy

what bikes/peds do they use? how many drops do you do on a weeknight on average?

I dont remember pizza hut doing a per drop bonus /shrug, mines on 6.50 an hour which is nice as its just below the threshold for student loan repayments...

I think you misunderstood, it is definitely not free food whenever. You get your one little pizza, or a side (not both), each shift. And there is occassional messups, which result in you getting a couple of slices of a pizza if you want it. It's definitely not a free food fest as the boss doesn't want you eating his profit Sad

The scooters (i know... Crying or Very sad ) are 2-stroke Peugeot Ludix/Loomix/some variation in spelling OR i think (not certain) some Honda 4-stroke that's better. They're both 50cc and restricted to 30mph making them even less safe as a result of not being able to keep up with other traffic (fortunately by a quirk of fate i get far less aggro from other drivers on the scooter mine uses because it's somehow not been properly restricted to 30 Thumbs Up ). My local has the Peugeot pieces of crap, although its up to the franchisee whether they have the Peugeot or the Honda (although that's all they can choose from apparently!).

Number of drops various ALOT, especially if it's a student town/city. The more students, the more seasonal it is. I've done as little as 3 and as many as 15 in a 4 hour shift. The average throughout the summer holidays when most of the customers aren't there is maybe 8-10. Although without any doubt there is always at least one or more lengths of time at which you are stood in the shop waiting (i.e. it's not non-stop for an entire shift, ever).

But don't let me put you off too much, it is a fun job, even if it's not something i could do for a career.

Anyway, i completely forgot to congratulate the OP. So congratulations on your new job, and good luck Thumbs Up

I found the opposite to be true. Rarely would posh/rich people tip, but council estate dwellers usually did, and often much more.

There's a reason why rich people are rich... Wink

Edit: and congrats on the job!

Well thanks all,

To clarify on the rich/tip comment, For the place im working for now compared to pizza hut, pizza huts rich clients would be this shops poor clients. And yes i have also found it to be the case, that the nicer the house, and seemingly richer the customer is the less likely you are to get a tip. Its the rich bastards that will order 30.50 worth of pizza then blankly give you two crisp twenty pounds notes and pocket your whole float without somuch as a thank you.

I have started a shitlist, everyone who is a cunt to me gets their address and phone number recorded so months down the line if i still feel the need i can get them somehow Razz... makes me feel better anyway. Oh and city boys making 200 pound orders that require two drivers certainly dont tip... Thumbs Down
