Why do riders offroad stand up on the pegs? Always strikes me as being arse backwards cos you're raising your CofG

Presumably it allows you to shift your weight when going up/down hill, but why on the flat?

You can see further forward,

your legs become your own personal suspension system.

You can move your weigth left, right, forward or backward easily.

Supposedly lowers your centre of gravity although I have heard arguments it does the opposite.

And if it's a trials bike, it's a hell of a lot more comfy to stand up than sit down on them, even on the road!

And it stops your tank from pummeling your bollocks too.

its the only way to ride ruts/mud/rough terrain properly. you have to move your weight around to maximise your balance on the bikes and grip of the tyres.

I remember a 70 year old trail rider giving me his words of wisdom one day. He looked at me with watery, red veined eyes and said,

I was helping to pull him and his KLX250 out of a huge bush at the time.
