Can you insure a bike just for theft?

So, if I buy a bike, but dont yet have a license and therefore wont ride it for a while. Can I insure it and just against theft and store it in my garage for a while?

Try speaking to your house contents insurer rather than a normal motorcycle insurer.

Carole Nash do it for quads and motocross bikes I believe, not sure about other types of bike. I gather it's quite expensive.

Just don't buy a bike.

I don't get how so many people MUST buy a bike they don't have a licence for and just to have it sitting there doing nothing and depreciating.

You are wasting money that could potentially mean the difference between you having enough money for the test or not.

Pass first, then worry about what bike you're going to get.

google suggests lots of companies do Laid Up insurance but i can't find much on the sites it links too.

You expect to be riding this bike in a few weeks, so why not:

1. Give the guy the cash but get him to hold onto the bike and keep it on his insurance until you pass your test - less temptation to go for an illegal ride then as well.

2. Get the bike and insure it properly now - Not many companies off theft only insurance, so monthly policies are likely to be rare and expensive. You'll pay lots for the policy, then get reamed on the cancellation charge or admin charge to change it into a proper policy.

3. Get a bike when you pass your test. If he's desperate for money now then he'll be even more desperate in a few weeks. Also, no matter how great a deal it looks, another one in better condition will turn up cheaper as soon as you buy it.

Quite cheap. just over £50 for a year, subject to a minimum of £15. which is what it'll end up costing.

Just lock it up very securely and don't bother with the insurance, if it's just for a couple of weeks it's not really worth the insurance money surely, obviously it is if it gets stolen, but for a couple of weeks I wouldn't bother.

Out of sheer co-incidence, I just had a quick read through of the policy I took out yesterday with Bike Sure and there's a bit in there that says:-

Fire & Theft cover - Only applies to Comprehensive, Third Party Fire & Theft and Fire & Theft only cover.

So they must do a Fire & Theft cover policy?
