PostPosted: 13:25 - 08 Sep 2010    Post subject: Tax Disc Question Reply with quote

My tax disc ran out on the 1st September and I've not renewed it yet. I only just took the insurance out again yesterday so still haven't received the paperwork, just a PDF printable version for now.

If I pay online for the tax disc, it will take 5 days or so to arrive via post. I want to ride tomorrow, so if I got a pull say on Friday, would I get done for not displaying a tax disc, even though it's on it's way?

The alternative is, goto the post office and tax it but will they accept printed documents as proof of insurance?

If its a decent copy of the pdf how will the post office know its a copy ?

As for getting done just make sure you don't get stopped Wink
It's really down to the person involved, you could get done but any sane thinking person wouldn't give you a ticket.
I've not had my disc displayed on the bike all year and not had any problems.

I haven't had a tax disc on either of my bikes for over 2 years, I have been pulled a few times but it has never been commented on, they check on the ANPR database that the tax is valid.

Post office have twice denied a print out of my insurance to get tax.
Was a bugger as my insurance only issue online paper work.
Even a print out of that didnt work.
Taxed it online and road the same day.
Ive not shown a tax disk on my bike since, never.
Ive been stoped and the officer has been nice and told me I should at least carry it in my wallet - incase there database goes down and cannot check the bike for tax.
Just dont do anything silly to get pulled Thumbs Up

Bigger PO's won't accept print outs.

I went to a small village one and they accepted it fine.

You are allowed to ride to the PO to buy tax if you have the paperwork on you.

Insure it online. Whack a tax disc holder somewhere on the bike. Put the glass cover on your desk.
If they pull you tell them that it was there in the morning. Or just say "fucking thieving bastards they nick everything!"
Why would they pull you by the way?

They know me around here, wouldn't suprise me if either Judge Dred or his side kick (CSOs) notice it whilst at the shops or something.

Just wanted to check the legality of it and can't be arsed walking down to the post office for them to say they don't accept printed out insurance documents.

Think I will just tax it online now.

How will the post office person know that the insurance certificate is one that you printed out yourself rather than one that the insurance company printed? Confused

Surely this is true of any piece of paper you give to a PO clerk? I don't ever recall seeing an insurance certificate that had any form of security device on it.

Mine has "secure security markings" on it. Which all that is, is my name and registration repeated on the background over and over. I could doctor it easily.

My certificate says, "insurance to start 09/09/10 at 00:01am" which is just after midnight tonight. Does that mean I can't tax it anyway until the policy starts?

I should have qualified that with 'actual' security markings, like a hologram!

That said, I've taxed bikes with printed documents before and produced them to the police as well with no issues.

Anyway, electronic versions were formalised under 'The Motor Vehicles (Electronic Communication of Certificates of Insurance) Order 2010'. OPSI is being sloooow, so I couldn't tell you what provisions were in it for the printing of the certificate.

edit: There we go (still can't see the content, mind!): Amendment of the Motor Vehicles (Third Party Risks) Regulations 1972

You could still be given a ticket for it because it's not allowed.

And I'd expect that traffic cops have heard all the possible variations of "I'm on my way to get tax now". Wink

Done it a few times.
Taxed on-line.
They e-mail you a confirmation reference number.
You then turn the tax disc over, & writre on the back
"Taxed On-Line"
"Ref:- 1234-5678-9012"
"Date Paid-For!
til
"Expiry Date of New Tax"

Or print something off, similar and stick that in the tax-disc holder.
I actually got fancy, scanned the old tax-disc, the deleted a square where the date was, & put that crap in it.

Was advised that police wont do you for failure to display valid tax disc, IF you ARE displaying a valid Ref-No & vehicle IS taxed on the computator. (But dont take everything you read on the web as gospel! Fortunately I've not been stopped, before the real discs have come through!)

I will just have to wait until tomorrow morning then and take one of the other bikes down the the post office to get the tax, can't be arsed risking it on the off chance it gets spotted by robocop and his mate.

When I registered my ZZR for use in the UK 2 months ago I took along a printed copy of my insurance to the DVLA. Clerk there told me that they had just had instructions that they could now accept printed certificates, so I cant see the post office objecting.

If you do it online. It clearly states you are taxed and can use bike/car as you get confirmation of the tax.
It says it will take 5 days to arrive and that you can use your bike, while waiting for it to arrive.

I can't see anyone getting done for failure to display, as the DVLA are the ones who says its save you use.

It's a 30 quid fine if you are stopped for the sake of a few days I'd chance it anyway.

If you get stopped with the disk in the post, some coppers will be arses about it...it's your duty to have it displayed on your vehicle. I know this because I have been through this... Rolling Eyes

You might get lucky, but if I were you, I'd nip down the post office and use a service that could very well be taken away in the future!! Idea

Are you not already eligible for a juice 80 quid fine from the DVLA for not SORN'ing your vehicle for 5 days?

It states on the V11 renewal reminder:
All documents must be originals; not photocopies, faxed copies or downloaded copies. *
*Downloaded insurance certificates will be accepted. Confused

An offence is not committed if the vehicle is taxed or sorned within 14 days of the current tax disc expiring. The vehicle, however, may not be used or parked on the highway during this period of non taxation.
