Small dilemma for me at the moment.
Looking to move out with the other half, however the new pad is n Southampton *shudders*
I currently live in Portsmouth.
22 miles each way 'give or take. I would be making the trip 4 times a day. 88 miles in total, ive caculated the costs to be around £75 per week
Reason being, is the mrs dad has allowed us to rent one of his properties. No deposit needed so its a good offer.
I refuse to change my sons school at this moment in time as its a good school, and he likes it.
We really need our own place, and maybe some nights of the week stay where I am now, so he can see his nan/grandad.
How many miles per day do you travel!? Fuel costs per week??
Im really weighin up the pros and cons. |

Hi
Are you getting 29mpg? That is what it works out at (based on £1.10 a litre which it is round here).
My commuting distance has varied over the years. For much of it the distance was about 25~30 miles each way, which meant about an hours travelling once you take into account all the slow bits. Probably as far as I would want to go.
Have done 160 miles a day and that wasn't fun. 2 hours each way, an oil change in the car every 6 weeks and a hideous increase in mileage.
It isn't only petrol, but tyres (even if you eek your tyres out to 10k a set then that is at least 2 sets of tyres a year), oil changes, C&S sets, etc. The bike will be worthless after not a massive time. Add to that the time you will be wasting.
I understand why you don't want your son to move school and sympathise (I went through a hell of a lot of schools due to moving around and although at the time it didn't bother me, these days I am not sure it was such a good idea), but if he is going to have to move then it might be easier to do it sooner.
All the best

Hi,
cheers for that
I looked up on the 636 mpg which is around 32mpg and the petrol is around 119 mark here.
My bike is pratically worthless with the milage right now (60k)
But the things you mentioned its worth looking at in more detail.

Hi
Didn't think it would be that bad on fuel in normal use. Long commutes sitting at 80~90 on the ZZR600 I am getting a gnats under 60mpg.
At 32mpg it would be cheaper to run a petrol car (we are getting 31mpg from a 2L Alfa 156, and that is a lot cheaper on tyres, parts and servicing than a bike) let alone a diesel.
One other thing, are you going to be happy taking your son down the M27 in icey winter conditions every day?
All the best

If it is long term it would probably be worth getting a smaller bike to save on fuel a 250 should easily get twice the MPG. I would consider moving your son though if you are going to stay in Southampton, how long is the journey? 22miles in rush hour with a pillion must be 40 mins+ that is 3 hours a day you will spend on the bike. As it is rush hour and school mums are some of the worst drivers around the risk of accident is something I would be worried about especially with a young pillion.
If you are gonna move your kid it is best now right at the start of the year as opposed to later. How long do you envisage living at this place? ____________________ Well, you know what they say. If you want to save the world, you have to push a few old ladies down the stairs.

Yup agreed.. running of the bike/time/kit for Josh, getting him ready for and after school is time wasted and allot of effort.
However being offered a place rent free is a big bonus for us.
Agents around here want £1600 upfront deposits, even privatly there asking for £800 - and in my world, its not possible right now.

lol ^^^ Once school ends, he is home, or at the park.
I dont know any of the mums, and dont talk to none one there.
He has close friends at school, but they remain at school
So that isnt an issue.
plus living 6 floors up I dont allow him outside either - sounds harsh but with people these days I dont trust anyone.
he gets out with me alot, parks, days out so dont think im a harsh mum
New place is a house, with a park right oppisite.
Spose the real question is to ask him and see how he feels about starting at a new school
This is really tough lol |

Don't do it.. On paper things look ok, but when you really get down to it it will grind and wear you down massively to the point that any benefit of moving will be destroyed by the time sucked up in working. For short periods maybe but until your child is out of school?

Having done that commute fairly regularly in the past, it gets boring quickly. The afternoon run wouldn't be too bad 25-40 mins depending whereabouts in Scum you are gonna be. For the morning run however, you'd be looking at probably doubling that without adding the extra time for the obligatory weekly accident that slows eveything down even further... ____________________ "I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me."
