So, my mate has a WR125 which he loves to show off, and appropraitely he got himself a new exhaust system (the big one is written all over it but not sure if that's the proper name). Anyway, after spending about £300 quid on this exhaust system he's left the baffle in the can, claiming it will reduce performance if he removes it. Now, it seems silly to me to spend that sort of money on something if you aren't going to get the best out of it. So, what are the pros and cons of removing the baffle? Very Happy

Hi

Depends what kind of baffle.

If it is a road baffle designed as a bodge to go in the end of the silencer to keep the noise down then he might gain something from removing it (how much varies on how badly designed it is, removing the road baffle from my Bandits Akrapovic adds about 5% to the power, Marjay had a FAR bigger difference with a can on his old Daytona 955).

If you mean the actual baffle from the silencer then probably nothing to be gained. Just make it noisier.

All the best

Keith

I don't know the specifics, but i'll try and describe it:
It's basically a tube with one open end (pointing out of the exhaust) and then small holes around the other, sealed, end. Oh, and it's the road version of the WR. If anyone can tell what i mean from that description i'll be very surprised! Embarassed

Also, does anyone know the legal volume we have to stick to now? 96 Db springs to mind.

i dont think there's an actual limit anymore. I think its just "reasonable". i may be wrong there though, so dont flame me!

Hi

See if you can take a piccy. Normal aftermarket can contains a perforated tube down the middle surrounded by baffle packing. Removing this will do you no good. Sometimes to quieten them down for road use there is an addition bit that goes in the end which consists of another smaller often perforated tube.

The limit is FAR lower than that (low 80s db), but it all depends on how it is measured. Think the official limit is measured in a ride by test, going through a measured area starting at half peak power in a specified gear and using full throttle. As doing this the microphone is a fair distance from the bike a lot of the noise level has dropped away.

MOT test is just that it must be as quiet as a standard exhaust in reasonable condition (and not be marked "not for road use" or the like).

It is also an offense to make an exhaust noisier than standard irrespective of whether it is still under the noise limit. But this law normally only seems to get thrown at those with noisy cars.

All the best

Keith

Cheers for the help.
I'll see what i can do about getting a photo. Need to find the right plyers to take the baffle out first though! Shocked
