An 'X' bike?
What, like a bike that used to be?
Maybe you mean an X-Bike like the super-hero X-Men ride?
Or a prop, from the X-Factor perhaps...

X-Bike!!?!? FFS!

I think you mean Dirt-Bike, possibly, if you want to sound like a chav, a 'Crossa', or in old money, a 'Street-Scrambler', or modern parlance a Trail bike, or if you are a marketing man, a 'Duel-Sport'

As to the query about knobly tyres.... well..... depends on the bike, depends on the tyre, depends on the surface, and it depends on the rider.

Your typical chinese Takeaway 4 stroke 125 Trail-Bike, would probably be a lot more likely to spin a wheel than say a Yamaha TZ125 race bike.

Reason being, while it only has a lowly 9bhp, compared to the 40odd a GP TZ makes, the cheap tyres are as ard as iron.

DT125, on decent knoblies, restricted to a learner legal 12bhp, shouldn't really give any worries, unless you are stupid with it, and are a bit brutal on throttle and or clutch on more slippery surfaces, like greasy wet tarmac.

Knoblies are a compromise tyre, like the bike. There are tyres that work better on road, better on dirt, you cant have it all-ways round.

But, even a full competition knocbly on tarmac, will normally give pretty good grip. Long knobles & limited contact patch, though does mean they give some wiered handling anomolies, the treads bend when you lean into a corner, and the tyre can sort of 'walk' side-ways....... not so pronounced on more road-biased tyres, but still there to some degree.

If you know your bike, know your tyres and know your capability, riding on knoblies shouldn't be a sure way to crash...... so provided you dont try pushing the front end into corners trying to keep up with the kid trying to get his knee down on an Aprillia RS or the like, shouldn't be any big deal.

Welcome to the forum, BTW...... but as a first question, bit of a wild one?

I presume that you are new to bikes? In which case, you might like having a shuftie round 'New-Bikers', for the low-down on stuff like your licence and choosing your first bike, and ask advice there.

But PLEASE, ffs, dont call dirt bikes 'X-Bikes' or 'Crossa's'! Makes me picture some-obe that lives on a council estate, wearing three stripes and hoodies, and gaining thier biking experience nicking twist & go scooters, to raz over the rec, baiting the rozzaz!

Thanks, i think.

Only did the CBT the other day, someone at work has the bike for sale so as its cheap, local and MOT'd etc it looks like the easy option rather than bidding on ebay something thats 50 miles away.

Ill have a word with the chavs on my council estate and a) ask em not to nick my bike and b) to teach me their slang so i dont offend people on a website.

Offroad knobbly tyres are less grippy on tarmac than normal road tyres, they're a lot less grippy when the roads are cold and damp.

Only if they have had the lights smashed off, the ignition chisselled out & frame & engine numbers ground off!
