Just looking outside at the rain at work and it reminded me of the time I was travelling Poland.
I booked a Hostel on the internet for about 25 euro’s a night, near the Czech boarder. The reason I booked the hostel was the online picture, I didn’t actually believe the photo, it was what looked to be a log cabin on a mountainous range with a huge lake behind it.
To cut a long story short, it was just as the picture described, i was stunned TBH. But to get there was the killer.
The guy in the taxi stopped in pouring rain when we reached what seemed to be a few hundred feet above sea level, past the houses, past the tourist shopping village. He was trying to describe to me that he could no longer drive up and that I’d have to walk the rest of the way. What at first sounded like “2 minutes long” actually meant “2 hours walk”. I had with me my Burgan (think that’s it, large army rucksack) full of all my stuff. In the range of 20k I imagine.
The walk consisted of path ways and rocky areas up a ridiculous degree of climb. I’m not in the army, far from it. In fact I’d never faced anything like this in my life. Every corner I turned I saw a rocky path that led up this mountain until i couldn’t actually see it anymore....I didn’t know the route, occasionally i found blue markers which the taxi driver had said to follow but when you can’t actually see your goal this becomes mentally tiring.
Being hot because of the work involved, wet because of the rain coming down and the ground conditions, i started to go a little mental at one point. I had no food or water so my mind started to wonder....WTF am i doing?
When I finally rounded a corner on a rocky path (after about 2hours of walking) i could see the hostel about 2 miles away, in the distance. During the last couple of miles my knee started to give me some grief, it’s from a past martial arts injury and my other knee’s not much better from a bike accident. With no one around to help if needed this is where i needed to push. I found a fresh water stream, took a bit of water to drink from that and then set about doing the last couple of miles.
The scenery was stunning, I’ve never been a walking holidays person but i can see the appeal. When i finally reach my destination I’ll always remember taking off my kit and jacket to sit down in the cafe for a hot chocolate. It was no Everest but then I’m no explorer, to be faced with such a task having no idea initially, was probably one of the toughest things I’ve done.
(The hostel shown is not where i stayed but very similar)

Huang Shan China, 2002
Took a very very long time on the Bus to get to the base of Huang Shan. One of the cable cars was being serviced so I took a 5 hour bus to the back cable car. This was scary in itself as the bus driver appeared to be suicidal and would slide the rear of the bus around drfiting around corners, where there is a 300-600metre drop on one side its scary.
I noticed a huge queue which did not appear to move even though several cars came. I noticed a lot of tough stocky blokes carrying stuff up the mountain on their backs. I figured well if these blokes can walk UP the mountain carrying a filing cabinet on their backs. I can walk up just carrying a backpack. I mean it didn't look higher than the peak in HK which takes 2 hours to walk up.
I got to a stelios pass type arrangement up 1000s of stairs constantly being overtaken by tough blokes carrying 20 cases of beer and such like and would stop buy beer/food off those guys and continue. 3 days later I arrive at the top..... and it was cloudy as hell so you couldn't see a smegging thing. Though there was this cool bit where you would see clouds drift towards you and disperse. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. London to Hailsham in a blizzard, at night, wearing only summer leathers without ever having been there before.
Hypothermia... fuck me I was damn near catatonic. Nigh on bludgeoning motorists for making me creakingly use the brake of clutch.
If you mean physical endurance, working Mozambique. Long hours, next to no food, and around christmas we were doing 3 launches a day. So set up, load boat, launch boat, do dives, roast in sun, unload, swap gear and start again. And after each dive you really just want to sleep anyway.
Ooh that reminds me though. I did all that one joy, but with a cold a few times. Ever had a reverse block from a 30 meter dive, then been forced to go back down on the next one? You need a day off certainly afterwards, but the pain is exquisite I assure you.
Quote diving safety regs, I fucking dare you. ____________________ China traffic/travel bike vid - When I make a sweeping statement, please add the word 'statistically' in to the sentence before you bitch...
From September 2014 to January/February 2015 I will not be using any English, nor reading any. As such, I won't be on here. PM at will, but I won't be checking/posting unless in emergencies. Certainly not for the first couple of months. Please berate me savagely if I break that rule... |

2007 New Forest & Isle of Wight On & Off Shore challenge. 120 mile pushbike ride in a day (road bikes) - 60 miles round the island, 60 miles round the Forest.
Started at 8am, at around 3pm, after 80 miles or so my rear derrailieur went into the spokes of my back wheel, destroying the derrailieur. Bodged it by shortening the chain, and stretching it (ever so slightly) around one sprocket on and the big chain ring. Thaving so highly tensioned meant that the effort to rotate the pedals was crazy, but kept going, solo, as everyone dropped me, for the last 40 miles. It rained for 30 of them.
I was shattered from effort, lack of energy due to being poorly prepared with not enough snacks, it was getting cold and dark and I had no lights. Netarly had a head onb crash with a acr as I just didn't clock it I was so fucked. I eventually made it to the finish at 8pm. I've never suffered so much on a bike before or since, or had such an appetite.
That's probably the worst physically, but attending the births of my two kids definitely represent the most arduous 24hours of my life. |

I ran 3 miles at the gym last week.
I had never ran in 9 years (since I got a car at 17 years old).
The only reason I went to the gym in the first place was because I started to get pains right in the centre of my chest when I done even a brisk walk, so thought I'd better do something about it.
Still got the pains in my chest at the 3 mile mark, but at least it is better than my 0.01 mile (that I got the pains at on my first day at the gym).
***Probably done a lot better strength/endurance stuff in my years, but cant think of anything recently (apart from my 3 mile run). |
