Hi all, bought my first bike yesterday Smile

It's a 2000 Honda Hornet CB600F and is in pretty good condition. The only problem is that it's been used as a daily commuter for the past 2 years so it's pretty dirty.

I'm planning on giving it a good clean tomorrow, I've bought some Autosol and some Gunk. Just worried about using the Gunk on it, are there any bits I should avoid? (i.e. brakes!)

Thanks

(ignore the missing battery cover)

Reading the product info : Razz

USE DIRECTIONS: Wear proper eye protection and gloves when using this product. Spray Cleaner
Degreaser onto item, let stand for a few minutes. Wipe away with a wet sponge or cloth. Extremely severe
grime may require a second application. Rinse thoroughly with water. To limit over spray, do not use on windy
days

PRODUCT LIMITATIONS: Will not prevent rubber cracks due to age and ozone attack. Avoid contact with
aluminum or magnesium wheels, painted surfaces, glass and non-rubber surfaces. If splashed on these
surfaces, rinse off over spray promptly to prevent damage.

Just to add. Don't wash when the bike is still hot.

Err, maybe I'm being a bit dim here, but isn't that how "Gunk" works, you apply it then wash it off, thus removing the "Gunk" and the crud you wanted to remove?

As for not using it on aluminium, why not?

When I had bikes with polished bits on I gunked regularly, other than cleaning, nothing else happened.

I seem to remember that on the tinned product, (not the aerosol), it suggested diluting the "Gunk", with water, for cleaning paintwork, I've done it, it works!

I just use cheap poundland Engine Degreaser or Brake cleaner for removing thick crap.

Just a note, but have you removed the side panel that covers the batt?

I use WD40, a bucket of water, and some washing up liquid.

Spray everything with WD40 (Apart from the obvious brake discs, pads, tyres and seat), and leave overnight.

When you next come to clean the bike, soapy water, and it will clean much easier.

I was wondering why you want to clean it (other than it providing an opportunity to get familiar with its nooks and crannies) as it looks much cleaner than any bike I have owned already.

Be careful - WD40 will rot rubber and fairy liquid contains salt so they might not be the best to use.

IMO gunk has been surpassed now by much superior degreasers, my personal favourite is AutoGlym, at around 7 knicker, it might seem expensive but it lasts ages.

BTW, congrats on your first bike OP - it's a great feeling huh Question Cool Just be careful, there's a lot of idiots out there Wink

Come to think of it... AutoGlym is actually quite amazing, haven't used it in a while though, cleaning on a budget!

Edit: I can't post to save my life.
