The best thing to do is head back to the drs and tell them. Chances are they might put you on a stronger one like prozac or something. Citalopram worked for me but they dont work for everyone according to the dr that gave me them a few years back.

Might be worth looking at trying to change things in your life that are making you depressed, rather than relying on medicine.

If I may butt in here,

Depression isn't being sad, it's a term which gets used too much and in the wrong context eg. I'm a bit depressed after loosing my cat." This is not depression this is just being sad.

Depression is a mental illness which just happens, one of the symptoms of which is acting/feeling sad.

So in short, there is no reason people are depressed, as much as there is no reason that dyslexic people cant spell lol. It's just an illness.

Because he has a serotonin imbalance.

Try to stay off Venlafaxine/Effexor - its a nasty drug that is hell to get off.

It numbs the 'depression' but at the expense of everything else.

I'd avoid Paroxetine (trade name Seroxat) too. That stuff's not good. You have my sympathy on your plight. You got good family/friend support to rely on? Might be worth considering counselling sooner rather than later too...

This is a classic example of there being nothing medically wrong with you, and your life being a problem not some chemical imbalance.

Maybe they will help you, feel a bit better to keep going, but I think its dangerous altering your brain chemistry with drugs on a long term basis.

It could be the drugs havent kicked in yet, you could go back to the doc and get something stronger, or you could try to do things by yourself.

I dont know the answers, but I dont like it when people get the idea that depression is always down to something inside and should be treated with pills.

Best wishes mate to you and yours. I have no advice or any input I just was interested to the reasons.

Well here's an idea. You're on medication and you don't believe its working so the best thing you can do is go on to a motorcycle forum and ask for a better one?

I understand you're not in a good place at the moment, but surely it would be better to ask a doctor or other health professional?

Is used for nerve damage mostly (in small doses) but not addictive.

I'd like to think that your GP is both supportive and accurate in his/her diagnosis, so go back and speak to them and say what you have here. If you don't feel comfortable talking with them try another GP who you can have confidence in.

I would take a quick flyer that you under an enormous amount of pressure and stress and are probably not taking great care of yourself either, given that you're so busy looking after everyone else and no doubt being 'strong'. Just remember that you need to look after yourself too. Try and make sure you eat well - sensible, good nourishment and not missing meals. If possible some fresh air and exercise even if it's only walking the kids to pre-school, nursery etc. it's better than nothing. And as for trying to get some decent sleep and rest, I'd reckon that's but a dream away with young kids, but tiredness has an enormous effect on how you feel.

Just make sure that you're not palmed off with pills instead of getting the proper help you need and always ask about the effects of what they're prescribing, the possible long term effects and process of stopping the medication. Any GP that denies you this is not doing their job well, so change until you are happy or ask for a referral.

The NHS says this about depression:
Quote:
Depression is often an illness. If you're depressed, the usual feelings of sadness that we all experience temporarily remain for weeks, months and years. They can be so intense that daily life is affected. You can’t work normally, you don’t want to be with your family and friends, and you stop enjoying the things you usually do.

Suggesting that it can be either a chemical imbalance, or due to what is happening in life generally.

Less likely for people on here to have had drug companies spending many thousands of pounds trying to convince their drugs are the best and more likely to have actually taken them Smile.

I have to admit, if it weren't working for me at that dose, I'd give up and try coping with nothing instead.

Although I'm not especially thrilled about putting brain-altering chemicals into the already-scary mix that is my personality, a little THC from time to time is more than sufficient to fuck my brains up and help me forget my problems for a while Cool Thumbs Up
