Is this long enough for MOD1?

Hi,

I have recently done my CBT and theory test, both completed first time from no bike experience.

I have booked three days for MOD1 training, which also includes some MOD2 on road training.

The first day is on a 125, the other two are on a 500/600. The test is on the forth day. I will book the MOD2 if MOD1 is passed. The days are 9am - 4pm.

I do not own a motorbike, so cannot practice. All training will be done in them three days. Do you think this is long enough, or should I get some lessons in the meantime?

An afternoon is probably long enough for the Mod 1 training, unless you really struggle to get to grips with the slow control. I was bored of going round and around after a couple of hours.

I'm sure it can be done in that way, and I'm no expert, but I would think it would be better to get yourself a 125 and go out on it as much as you can, as nothing can substitute road experience, and take some lessons as well to make sure you don't pick up any bad habits and that you know what you're doing, and what will be expected of you on the tests.

Is there a reason you can't buy a bike now?

What are you planning to do when you pass?

What's the rush?

might aswell get the test done now before they change it next month

also with no experience will help as you'll not have picked up bad habbits and can get all the skills right first

Well they mix in some MOD2, so we get the road experience there.

I don't want the expense of buying a 125 - I could do this with the training and rent a bike for a day if need be.

When I pass hopefully this year, I intend to buy a 500 next year.

Hi there, I would say you will be fine. You don't say how old you are but if you are doing direct access or the restricted route and are planning on getting on to a bigger bike at the end of the process DON'T BUY A 125! You will be pi**ed off with it as soon as you pass on a bigger bike. However, if you are only able to ride a 125 once you have passed then GET IT NOW if you can.

I passed my direct access in quick succession without owning a bike. You might need a few more lessons to get your traffic confidence up but then on the plus side you don't have the expense of another bike changeover at the end of the process. I was very tempted to buy a 125 during the process but was talked out of it by every single one of my biker mates....they were definitely right!

3 Days of MOD1 seems ages, I'd check if they intend to keep you on the carpark all the time, if they do I'd cancel it cos they're bending you over.

Most places will take you through CBT to DAS in 5 days.

I done same thing myself, went straight thru for DAS after CBT for bigger bike, if your booked for 3 days would presume gonna be good mix of road and car park (mod 1) training, i only had 2 and it was fine, but he made sure got time on road as had to ride from Cov - Leicester for the test so would be bit naive to go straight out on 500cc without little bit of road time, but bloody loved that ride to leicester and back, ditto above on 125 - don't get it, i passed mod 1 then had mod 2 week and half later, fortunately passed, ride back with no ear piece and hi vis was great, and even instructor made it more fun saying you can't hear me so have to keep up - pure brilliant!! then home to sort insurance and out straight away on Thundercat!!

3 days does seem a long time for Mod 1. I had no bike either and effectively had 2 days for Mod 1 & 2 as follows:

For Mod 1 I did four 2 hr sessions the first of which was road time conversion from 125 to 500cc the other three were made up of a 15 mile each way ride out ( A and B roads mainly rural) to the DSA pad 1 hr on the pad (the one I would sit the test on) and 20 mins of urban road technique and slow riding - Passed with clean sheet

For Mod 2 (1 week later) I had three 2 hr lessons made up of 5 hrs road time and 1 hr of Mock test and do's and don'ts - Passed with 2 minors.

I would say a whole day on a 125 is a bit excessive and probably unnecessary. There's no point in spending a day learning how to control a 125 at slow speeds if you're doing your test on a 500. That plus I got told that riding a 125 too much had given me the braking abilities of a muppet (couldn't stop without locking the rear as I was used to rear drums).

Then again I'm guessing maybe your instructor knows a lot more about this than I do. Were your particularly nervous/ropey on your CBT? My instructor let me jump straight on a 500 after my CBT, but I guess if he's not confident of doing that with you it's best to spend the extra day and not kill yourself.

Also, be warned, having Mod 2 stuff at the same time as Mod 1 can be stressful. Well, it was for me. On the way to my Mod 1 test my instructor was telling me what I was doing wrong with my on road riding. I was worrying about the Mod 1 while also beating myself up for making Mod 2 mistakes. Basically doubled my stress levels and led to me having a little bit of a tantrum on the way to the test centre.

Yeah, the 125 is an assessment. If that goes OK, will be hitting the 500 earlier.

Seems like made the right choice, I'll post how it goes.
