I'm of no use. I've never dabbled with anything that 3 in 1 penetrating oil can't solve |

There is a what I presume to be a mortice lock at the bottom of one of the gates. The bolt is about 3inch by 1inch and it is all jammed up.
I have the keys to it and have been told, to repair the lock, by stripping it down and cleaning it up.
I know there are a few amongst us who play around with lock picks and such so could someone please give the gist of what i'm going to be attempting.
Thanks in advance. |
Well, your first best bet would be to take a look at the MIT guide to lockpicking, because it's a good starting point. :edit: - look here. Then we could go with googling 'mortice lock diagram' - they're not all the same internally.
Finally, there are several locksmith/lockpick shops online, and they usually sell practice locks, which have got perspex sides, so you can see what you're doing. I'm not suggesting that you shell out for one, but it'll give a decent idea of what's in there.
As for picking it, well it's technically possible to do it with a few pushbike spokes, but it's a pig to do if you've not got much practice at this type of lock (like me, unfortunately).
Liberally douse it in penetrating oil, leave it a day or so, tap all round, repeat the process. Try the key. I don't believe it'll have masses of steel/iron inside, so while it will corrode, it's not going to rust into a single lump.
Hope that's of some help. I repeat - I am far from an expert when it comes to mortice locks. I'm much, much better at Chubb-type locks. ____________________ '10 SV650SF, '83 GS650GT (it lives!), Questionable DIY dash project, 3D Printer project, Lasercutter project |

I'll see what I can do tomorrow. But there will be no pics of it apart as I don't take my phone in the workshop.
It is about a foot square and if it's anything like the rest of the bloody things it'll be shagged.
They seem to heavy to be brass and are rather shagged as well so that's another thing to sort out.
The keys are rather ornate. like these.

But they are alot bigger than those shown and the end is slightly different.
Sort of like a harry potter key. ____________________ amnesia - Never in the history of usernames has one been more accurate. Warped indeed. You sir are a fecking oddball. |
