Not tried paraffin personally, (simply because I don't have any, and have been advised against it).
Got rid of a few tight spots with WD40 and kitchen roll.

Whichever you use, prepare for a LOT of shite to come out of your chain considering you say it's rather filthy.

wd40 will ruin the seals. Paraffin is £6ish at B&Q. Get that.

It is paraffin, sold as lamp fuel in B+Q and in homebase as Parasene.

Costs about £5-6 for 4L, good stuff.

Use a spray bottle or a cloth soaked in the stuff along with a very soft toothbrush (the 10p ones from tesco are ideal) to wash the crap off. I then use a paintbrush and a pot of engine oil to lube it back up.

so Donnybrago, you personally only use engine oil to lube your chain? don't you use "proper" chain wax/lube?

Oil seems to be much better for me, with the dedicated chain lubes they always ran dry after a short ride. The oil keeps it nice & greasy. I was using chainsaw oil.

Paraffin to get it off (kerosene or diesel - any heavy fractions of hydrocarbons will do nicely) and then some 20W50 back into the chain oiler for summer use. Ridiculously cheap and does the job. I normally get a small plastic bottle of 3 in 1 oiler and once that's finished, I decant the 20W stuff into the bottle and use it as a decanter. If not, when it's really wet, the chain sorta cleans itself

Use light oil, just like it says in the manual.

Thats a Murco, have also seen it at Morrisons, Shell and Esso petrol stations so there is no need for a special trip to B&Q Cool

I use old engine oil and a tooth brush. Scrub the shit out of it to loosen up the dirt and work the oil into it, then give it a quick rinse of oil over it and it's sorted.

Totally agree, 5 litres of the stuff has lasted me over 5 years.

Paraffin & an electric tooth brush do the job for me. I just poor an inch in to an empty baked bean can and us it like that.

If I knew it was called "paraffin" then I would of entered "paraffin" into the BCF search engine, hence this thread. I just remebered reading something about fuel for garden lamps etc. Thumbs Up

You use a wire brush? Shocked Fuck me your seals must be getting a beating with that and WD40.

Toothbrush taking a long time? I spent 5 minutes, cleaning my chain, sprockets and sprocket cover on the new Hornet and that was filthy as anything. Then lubed it up and set it to the correct slack. 5 minutes, for 1000's more miles...
