naked bike

hello i am going to look at some bikes over the weekend.

i dont want a sports bike to start with and im liking the look of the naked bikes. what i would like to know is naked bikes a pain in the bum with the wind on you all the time or dont it make much diffrence with fairing or not?

on my test i rode a suzuki gs500 which dont realy have fairing that was windy but woundering if fairing would make a big diffrence,

im planning on looking at yamaha fazers

One way or another your going to get blown around. With a naked bike you get the wind in front of you as you have no fairing to cut through the wind.

With a fairing you get more problems with crosswinds as there is less gaps for the wind to cut through that way.

The trick is to work out what is the lesser of the 2 evils.

Sorry to hear that Clanger,

I'm a bit confused at what to get for my first big bike too, I do love the look of the naked bikes but would really like to travel a fair bit on it which will include plenty of motorways, oh decisions decisions.

My Hornet isn't much fun on the motorway but I have done a few 3 hour stints (fuel stop in between obviously, poxy tank range). It is doable but you have to alternate between 90-100 and 70 for a few minutes to give your neck a rest.

On a normal , quick ride you wont notice a thing and legal NSL speeds are completely fine.

The only thing I will say is that a fairing would be useful to tuck behind when going by lorries in the wet, the spray on the visor is pretty annoying, the sand in my vaseline so to speak

I think it depends on what kinds of road your going to be riding on really.

If your mainly going to do urban areas and country lanes and you love the look of a naked. Stick with it, you'll not notice that much difference.

If however your going to be doing some A roads, Dual carraigeways, motorway driving etc then your probably going to welcome a fairing to buffer that wind away, its not bad for short doses but if your doing 15-20min+ constant its going to be a bit of a strain with a naked. Like someone mentioned though you could just slow down a bit if you really wanted to and have your heart set on the naked.

You get used to it, I thought nothing of long motorway trips on my bandit 1200.
One day I did 600 miles from Austria back to channel port often at 100mph or so on Belgian motorways (just keeping up with other traffic really)

I ride a naked and the first long journey I did was a killer. Was 130 miles and my neck was aching afterwards.

You get used to it though. I barely realise now, and just crouch into the wind if im going too fast.

Once upon a time in a town far away I had an RD350LC with a big black Rickman (I think) fairing on it. Was lovely to ride in all weathers. Then I decided to take it off and fitted clip ons etc for a more "racy" look.
I lost 20mph on the top end and felt like the bike was trying to throw me off the back.
Needless to say I quickly re-fitted the fairing!
