I've had an offer I can't really refuse. My son-in-law has a 1997 ZX6-R. As him and no.1 daughter are setting up home soon, he can't afford to tax/MOT/service etc the bike and to keep his car running as well. He's offered it to me to use for when I've passed my test next month if I pay for the tax etc and pay for him to add me to his well established insurance.

Is this a good idea? Can I trust myself not to wind this little beast up to warp speed on my daily commute? On the other hand, with such little outlay to get my hands on a regular ride, can I afford to turn this opportunity down while I'm racking up the overtime hours in order to pay for my own ride?

I think I know what the general consensus will be but I'm still interested in peoples opinions on an almost free bike...

Do it, but bare in mind it could end in tears. Draw up some kind of agreement that if the worst happens and it gets stacked/stolen whilst in your possesion, you pay the excess for the claim (assuming its fully comp) and some compo for his increased premiums thereafter. If its not fully comp - you have to think can you afford to replace it if you fuck it beyond all repair??
Providing I could do all this my conscious would be clear enough to use it.

Laughing Laughing Laughing Thumbs Up

I agree with swift though. Make sure the insurance is fully comp.

The bike I have been riding on since I passed my test was pretty much given to me on free loan. It was wasting away in a friends yard and he put it through the mot for me. I insured it and he signed it over to me as the registered keeper.

Knowing that one day he will want it back I am a lot more careful on it than I normally would be and I made sure the insurance is fully comp so if I do write it off I can give him the insurance money.

Its all about trust. Your son in law obviously trusts you enough to make the offer. I'd make sure he is serious and then go for it. It will get you used to riding a bigger bike without the hassle of buying one for yourself.

If it was my kid I wouldnt help them in the slightest with a large bike like a zx6r, not with insurance/mot/tax or anything involving money or even helping pick the bike up when they purchase it with the van.
I had a '97 zx6r myself, they aren't exactly slow..

It's all to easy to wind up dead or paralysed.

Just sayin..

Can't help but think you misread the OP, fella.

Matey, you've misunderstood. It's my son-in-law's bike, my daughter is well used to riding pillion, he's an experienced rider who's done more than a few trackdays. He's offering it me to use while they're setting up their new home as he won't be able to afford it/use it if I don't. This way I get a regular ride for nothing and he can still afford to use it when he likes.

I think the fact that it's not my bike will go some way to ensuring I'm as careful as possibly possible while riding it. It will definitely be fully comp, and yes, I can afford to replace it if necessary...

Thanks pal, quality advice as usual. Thumbs Up

Wouldn't worry about it, i passed my test straight onto a CBR600, not the quickest but it gets to the shiny side of 100 far too quickly.

Yes, you will want to pretend you're 8 years old in 2nd gear and nail it, and yes you will be doing 90mph by the end of it, so what? just do it in the right places Wink

Just kidding pal, sounds like a great idea to get you into biking on the cheap, take it easy and you'll be fine.

That has to be the most hypocritical tosh I've seen on BCF, a real achievement. Your later post adds the final touch.

As to the OP, sounds like an OK offer, lets you get some miles under your belt without a large outlay.

I got a ZX6R for my first big bike. They are pretty darn good, and cheap to boot. Capable of going to warp speed or bumbling along like a coffin dodger. Smile

One year later, I'm still alive despite the best combined efforts of Volvo and Rudolph Diesel.

Be careful, this could be classed as fronting by some insurance companies.

And I wouldn't for all the reasons given above, but mostly because of the accident/theft risk and who has to pay for what. Is there no way that you could get yourself a bike?

Absolutely, wouldn't be an issue to spend upwards of 5 grand tomorrow, but why? This way I can have the use of a 15 year old bike that I can dro[ without worrying about it. It's no biggie. I'm doing it. Test now please. NOOOOOOOWWWWW!!!!!!!!
