 |
|
Well I thought I might as well start this now as the weather has gone pretty crap!
I am going to be taking my CBR1000RR off the road next year, and using it as a track bike/race bike for next season, I'm sick of riding on the roads now, and really just want to do track work, and start club racing. I might keep a reflector and quick release reg plate on it, so I can ride it in the day on the odd occasion, but it will primarily be used for tracking and racing. The goal is to get my signatures so I can start road racing, but I will have to see how it goes, I might be complete crap at racing! I was considering swapping the bike for a 2011 ZX10R when it comes out, but the CBR will make an awesome track bike, so I'm just going to keep it!
This might be quite a long thread, and it will take me quite a few months to get it ready, as I'm am going to be getting quite a lot of parts from the US with probably quite long deliver times. I will probably also find bits and bobs that I need over the next few months, but I've got a general list of things that I think it needs to get it ready for a season.
Heres the list of things I have compiled to buy over the winter:
Track Fairings (With my company logo plastered all over them!)
Full Akrapovic Ti Exaust System (Or Arata if I can justify the extra spend)
BMC Race Filters
Bazzaz Fuel Management with TC and Qucikshifter
Ohlins TTX Rear Shock
Ohlins Fork Internals
Sato Street Hooks (for strapping bike down)
Sato Rear Sets
ASV Levers
Galfer Brake Disks
Performance Friction Pad's
Ohlins Steering Damper (Don't like the electronic one)
If I am doing well, I might also invest in some new wheels, but that will be last on the list.
Like I said, this will be a slow build, as long as its ready for next March, that's all that really matters!

Awesome
So does this mean you'll be doing very little road riding now? Or are you going to do what some people do and only tour etc? |

I will only be doing track work and Motocross next year most likely!
I might get a cheap Supermoto for the roads, but I'm not to sure yet! ____________________ 2009 CBR1000RR

I've done a bit of track work, loads of Motocross and loads of track work in my car! I am by no means the best rider in the world, but I feel I can hold my own with half decent people, and I really want to track the CBR, its such an awesome handling bike, I feel it would be perfect for track work.
I will be getting some spare wheels like you said, and will be sticking a set of wet's on them. I'm really not to bothered about having a 2nd bike, as I'm not interested in road riding anyway. I am quite positive I will end up falling off racing, I get quite competitive, so there will no doubt be a few incidents, but that's to be expected. I've factored in the cost of fixing the bike in to my budget for the season.
I was considering a 600, but I've got some friends racing next year, and there on 1000cc bikes, so I really want to be in there class! ____________________ 2009 CBR1000RR

Obviously If I could find a CBR ready for the track, I might be better off doing that! I will have a look around before I start my work! ____________________ 2009 CBR1000RR

Makes me cry, such a gorgeous bike deserves to be nurtured and thrashed on the road, not sliding down a track ____________________ 2017 KTM 350 XC-F - 2014 Yamaha R6 - 2005 Yamaha YZ125

Makes me smile, such a gorgeous bike deserves to be used to its full potential and not castrated on the road
You're a git for doing this though, I'm converting my RSVR to full track bike starting next month (after my last trackday on it) and was going to do a show and tell thread too
Good luck |

Thanks
I really want to build a track bike as opposed to buying one. I find it enjoyable to modify things, and then see the finished product, rather then buying something that has already been done. I've done this on all my car's, spend about 3x what it would have cost me to get something already done, but the whole fun is in seeing the finished product! I'm really looking forward to getting started, it will be the first time I have really gone all out on doing a bike ____________________ 2009 CBR1000RR

good on you for taking the step you wont regret doing it.
turning a roadbike to a racebike is the most expensive way of doing it. you'd get decent money for that bike in that condition, probably more than enough to buy a sorted 08 blade.
i wouldnt jump on the 2011 kwak until I saw some good racing results from it.
I started racing this year on a r1, ended up moving to a 600cc halfway through the season as I lost confidence in my bike.
have you timed yourself round any tracks and what series are you entering, if I was restart this season I'd definately would of joined bemsee novice class. ____________________ Dean Stone #777

Was going to say the exact same thing as Deano. Sell that and buy a slightly older already spec'ed track bike.
But saying that it would be fricking awesome to do that work on it, a nice slow transformation into a track beast.
What tracks have you done on it? ____________________ Current bike - GSX-R1000 k8 |

I've not timed my self on the CBR, and I haven't got a clue what series I'm going to enter! I'm just going to enter the same one as my friends, so I can race with them! Like I said, I'm not the quickest person ever, but you have to start somewhere! I fully expect I will be coming in at the back of the grid for most of my firs season, but that's to be expected! I was considering a 600 for the track, but I really want to race in the same class as friends, and there all on 1000cc bikes, so the CBR will do!
I'm really looking forward to it, I love riding on track, it's just miles better then the roads!
I've done Oulton, Cadwell and Anglesea, I hope to do some more soon, I really want to do Mallory. Oulton is only down the road from me, so thats my usual track. I have also done a number of other tracks in my car, so I have a general idea of track driving/riding. I have never raced my bike though, so that will be new! I've done time trials in my car, but never raced against other people, really can't wait!

1000cc bikes are normally restricted to the open/production classes and there is no reason that you cant enter that class with a 600. Normally the open grids usually full with quick riders so production classes tend work out to a be more novice friendly grid and there are not many clubs that run them. ____________________ Dean Stone #777

Thanks for the info mate!!
I shall look in to the racing a bit more, but that's helpful! I still want to use the CBR though!
To be honest, I originally had the intention of just using it as a track bike with no racing, but I've sort of been persuaded in to it ____________________ 2009 CBR1000RR

I watched some New Era races at Castle Coombe a few weeks ago. Great racing, the fast guys are very fast but some of the guys towards the back of the group were not fast at all, kinda made you want a go They were lapped within 2-3 laps!! Fastest guy there that day was some guy who races in BSB Supersport (not even a front runner!!) on a 675, he was beating the 1000's easily even on a fast track like Castle Coombe. ____________________ My bikes are at https://www.bikepics.com/members/dynamight/ |
