Virus help!

Hi, sorry if this makes no sense, im having to use my mobile Ok, i let my dad use my laptop, only to get it back with a virus. It will start up fine, but them theres loads of popups and info things all saying its at risk. It wont start the internet or antivirus. I was going to format the hard drive and start fresh. Will i have to reinstall an OS? Any other suggestions before i start? Asapently its a form of scareware?? Thanks

Only thing you can do if its that scareware thing is reformat. You will need the orignal recovery disk that came with the laptop.

My eldest once installed something like that before by randomly clicking on pop ups that appear. Next thing we knew we had pop ups from the moment we turned the pc on telling us our system is infected and we need their anti spyware program to fix it. Nothing we could do would get rid of it and in the end we had to completly wipe the system and start again.

Sounds exactly like mine. I havent got a recovery disc, but i have got a legal ( ) XP disc. Is that all i need? Ta

Download that, burn it to CD and then use it to fix your laptop. Shouldn't be necessary to reformat it.

The above tip re malwarebytes is good and should get rid of it.

To get your internet working and you have internet explorer,
go tools, internet options, connections , lan setup,

then make sure the use proxy box is unchecked, this will enable you browser to work again and allow you to download the above software.

If you're lucky, you can just boot into safe mode and do a rollback to before you lent it to your dad. You'll still have to run Malwarebytes to clean up, but at least it won't be launching every time you boot.

There's a free tool called rkill which can be downloaded from several places, it will stop a lot of these malware things from running (until you restart computer) then you can often run other programs to work on it.
The safe mode (tap F8 on boot) plan mentioned above should work.

My laptop got a virus (your protection) ended up giving my computer to a mate, who wiped it and reinstalled xp onto it.

Also downloaded malwarebites for protection. No problem since then.

I got the virus from watching 24 season 8 on line.

Each time I've had the fake security warning virus, it's been just after visiting Pirate Bay. Don't have to download anything, it just appears, so I'm guessing it's one of the ads.

Malware bytes for the cleanup.

Also replace your HOSTS file (google that)

Many thanks for all the advice! So far Ive done a system restore which has enabled me to install malware bytes. That is currently scanning. Il get rkill too, just to make sure its clean cos i do alot of online banking. The last thing he was doing was watching shaun of the dead online. I currently use firefox, il have a look into ad blocker. Thanks for all the help, karma will be issued, i cant do it from my phone. Ta

Im now speaking to you from my laptop! Done a system restore to 3 days ago. The malware.org scanner has just finished and found no faults. I will do another one from rkill to make sure, but as i type now, all is well.

Really pleased i didnt need a re-format, as being a typically useless computer-ist, i havent backed anything up!
