I had arranged a price with someone (over the phone) to buy my bike. Sent him the Reg and my address details, then at the last minute he tells me that "hi im gonna have to leave the bike as its a bit further than i want to travel but thanks anyway and good luck with your sale". Anyway this morning we have had the following conversation via email and I just wanted to get the BCF opinion on it?

Him: hi is there anyway we could meet up id like to buy the bike if we could

Me: Sorry but I'm not willing to do that at the moment.

Him: im not a time waister i have cash waiting if you could meet me near gatwick then i can ride it home

Me: I'm sure your not but I would want you to look at the bike first, Gatwick is only 30 min from my house.

Him: as long as its as you say id buy it and id bring the cash with me and ride it home my wife doesn't like driving on motorways otherwise id come up typical woman i could meet you just of the m23 which is 1 or 2 junctions down from gatwick you could send me any pictures of any marks if you want but from what you said im sure id be happy with it

He sounded very reasonable on the phone, but I'm just not willing to meet someone to sell MY bike. Has anyone else had been in a similar situation?

I had a guy come view my 125 Varadero then call me back asking if i could meet him at a car park and he would pay. I thought it sounded a bit dogey so got the misses to follow in the car and take a note of his registration. TBH he explained he was going to leave the car at the car park and ride the bike 2 mins up the road to his house (the bike was a present for his misses). All turned out well, had a bat in the boot just in case. Wink

If you think its dodgy take a mate or someone in a car to follow you and if you get there and don't like it, just ride away.

I agree Stevie but as he's not seen the bike, I can just imagine turning up and him offering me a stupid price and wasting my time..

When I bought the Bandit, I met the owner selling it at Washington Services (to view the bike).

Agreed on a price (less than he was asking), then 3 days later he collected me from Washington Services and took me to his house to fill out the paperwork and for me to give him the cash.

Send him some pics and make sure he knows what the purchase price is before meeting him. Also take a mate or get a mate to follow you.

If you do go for it, try to turn up after him so you can drive past if it looks dodgy i.e a white van full of several big bald blokes. Smile

Take a friend as said above, maybe even somewhere with cameras like a garage.

As been said. Take someone big, take something solid. Get there before him, scope out the area then park somewhere out of sight to wait for him, encase a van of pikeys turn up. Also check the money is legit. Being out of your comfort zone, he may try and take the piss on price.

If you want to, ask for a reasonable deposit. Tell him if he wastes your time it'll pay for petrol and your time he's wasted. If he says no to that, I would be sceptical whether he actually wants to buy it or just haggle.

I've told him that if he comes to my house to look at the bike and we agree a price, I will drop it off in Gatwick for him.

It's only been advertised for a few days so I'm not going to start driving it about so people can view it.

It was easier for the seller to meet me at the service station, due to his and my location Thumbs Up

Although he did suggest meeting there. The only problem was I could not check the bike when cold, but I could tell it was well looked after. But I never pay the asking price Wink

You gave your address out? That's crazy. Now that person could easily rob you. It is usually best to meet somewhere public with lots of folk about.

On the other hand, if I were going to buy a bike and the seller was really cagey about giving me an address, I'd assume it was dodgy and walk away.

While i think i can almost see what you are getting at from do you really think that thieves are like vampires in that they can only rob you if you invite them into your house? Laughing

Well my bike is kept in a garage which is one of many and away from my house. As above I think you have a point but you're being paranoid.

Plenty of folk have had there bikes nicked this way; usually after giving out their address on the phone, or having someone come round and scope out their security.

I couldn't give a fuck if a buyer bottles it and doesn't meet me in a co-op car park. I find it laughable that the onus is on the seller to meet the needs of the buyer. A big 'fuck that' from me.

But you do what you think is best. I will continue to apply common sense and past experiences to how I approach selling (or buying) a bike.

Hmmm, I wouldnt buy a bike unless I could go and view it at the home address, the same address thats on the logbook. Confused
As for selling, you can generally tell the genuine people by their emails and how the are on the phone etc. If any odd requests came up like in your case id tell em to get fucked. Plenty more people will be interested if the price is right, you may just have to wait a little longer. If someone wants the bike that badly whats an extra 30mins to get to your address???

I'd expect to go to the home address after the initial meet.

There's no 'onus'.

You are looking to sell, they are looking to buy. If you make it difficult, they'll go elsewhere. It's hardly a conspiracy.

I sold my bike to a lady who didn't meet me at my home, but where I kept the bike. She hadn't seen the bike in over a year, and was happy enough to come along with a wodge of cash from a couple of pictures, AND, she signed the receipt saying 'sold as seen' AND my registration document was still at my Dad's address...

So long as you count the cash, and make sure it's real...then I don't see the problem. IF, however I wanted to buy a vehicle and the seller insisted on meeting somewhere like the side of a motorway - THEN I'd be suspicious!!! Karma
