How do I go about being elligable to ride a geared 50cc? Do I need to do my CBT on one or do I do a normal CBT on a twist and go, then do and extra course for the geared bike? Confused Please help!!!

You can ride a geared 50cc if you do your cbt on a twist-and-go.

Meh - that was certainly the case when I did it in 2002 anyway, and I've heard nothing saying it has changed.

I think what you've heard is a typical case of "spotty 16 year old making it up". Smile

There is only one type of CBT, and if you are 16 years old you are then entitled to use a bike which does not have an engine bigger than 50cc, and is not capable of doing more than 50kmph (about 31mph). If you are 17 then you are entitled to use a bike which is not bigger than 125cc and is not more powerful than 14.6bhp.

A CBT qualification is valid for two years, you can renew it by doing a CBT course again, and you can renew as many times as you want to. If you do a CBT at the age of 16 and do it on a 50cc bike, then when you're 17 you can ride a 125cc bike without doing any further courses. There is no different CBT or anything for using gears, you can get a bike with gears if you want to, or not if you want to.

Hope this is of help. Thumbs Up

I've only been told this too!!!! Exclamation Exclamation So how comes my local training school insist i do a clutch conversion course for 50 quid despite me riding for nearly a year now. Surely it's just a 10 minute session around the car park to see how the clutch and gears feel like and getting used to the biting point and stuff since i've ridden clutch before. They nearly scammed me for 50 quid.

hmmm sounds like they are scamming you there... Teaching how to use the clutch and gears correctly is part of the CBT..
The DSA Guide for CBT instructors quotes

Element C part b

change gear satisfactorily with proper co-ordination of the throttle and clutch etc etc etc

You should have still done the figure of 8 aqnd slow riding stuff...

A CBT is a CBT whether you do it on a geared bike or twist n go...

Can we just clear this up then. If a person does their CBT on an automatic they are still able to ride a geared bike?

To be precisely frank with you, my instructor wasn't too bothered about practising the certain elemets of the CBT. I was briefed on it all, but since i was riding my own bike to the training arena from the training centre ( i wheeled the bike to the training centre as it's only down my road), they figured that i should be able to cope on the roads as i admitted to have ridden previously (back home in indonesia where you could be 15 and ride a 125) Consequently, I regret not doing it.
