I had a feisty debate with a petrol station attendant last night in an attempt to point out her foolishness. Bear with me..

The petrol station I use regularly on the bike (every 2 commuting days) and in the car (every other weekend) is one of three within a mile of my house. I use it mainly because it is closest to the route back from work, and because it's the only one that allows bikers to keep their lids on whilst filling up and paying. It's not the cheapest around but their sensible helmet policy seems to keep the bikers happy. Most, I've noticed, use this place too.

Last week they had some trouble. A man threatened staff with a hammer before running off with the cash from the till never to be found.

Anyway, since then I have used the petrol station as normal and I had even chatted to the staff about the trouble they had etc. The young staff were quite shaken by it but it was only the second robbery in ten years or something - so quite a shock.

So fast forward to last night and I pull up outside the shop and pop in to get milk & bread. I didn't need fuel as it happens as I had filled up the previous day. I quickly got my shopping and headed to the till where I said the usual 'Hi, how are you?' etc to the young lad serving.

The rather portly lady who I usually chat to and always seems very friendly then appears out of the back (stock?) room..

"Didn't you see MY sign?"

"Er..what sign?" (The door was opened for me as I entered the shop so I didn't spot the A4 sheet of paper with HELMETS OFF PLEASE scrawled on it in felt tip)

"Oh - no didn't see it. Are you making us take our helmets off to pay then?"

"Yep"

"Oh let me guess. The guy that done you over was wearing a helmet?"

"Yes he was"

"Great, so now we have to fart ass about taking our helmets off just to pay for the fuel that you've already given us. Great system.
I wouldn't mind so much if you provided somewhere to place them - but you don't. So I have to carry it - and any shopping etc."

"Just pop it on top of your head like the scooter riders do"

"No, cos if it falls off it'll fall nearly seven feet and probably be fucked. What a joke, just because someone wearing a helmet does that we all have to suffer. Like a robber will read the sigh and take a helmet off anyway.."

Then shrugs a dismissive look at me and walks off, back to the stock room where she keeps her biscuit stash.

The young lads in the shop who are serving all now look very uncomfortable (isn't it funny how the air can change and make everyone a bit jumpy - perhaps I should have pulled out a hammer Wink j/k ) so I leave it and thank them for their time.

So anyway, I probably reacted badly to it being in a foul mood anyway so I probably will apologise next time I see her. I just absolutely fucking detest this ninnying attitude that she had that HER sign had been ignored, and that all us bikers etc will now be inconvenienced because of some wanker that will no doubt return and not take his bloody helmet off anyway....

AAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

/ rant

I can sort of understand them being cautious about avoiding a repeat of the previous incident... and I know what you're saying about being frustrated, but I for one won't be inconvenienced by their attitude because on the rare occasions I've been asked to remove my lid, I've voted with my feet, and just not gone back there again.

To be fair, 90% of the time when I've purposely left my lid on, it's just to see if they bother to ask.

I can almost understand their fright at anyone wearing a crash helmet - but what can they do?

Unless they physically prevent people from walking in with helmets on then nothing will change other than law-abiding folk being inconvenienced. A sign does nothing, as proved when I walked in with a helmet on.

Fucking dumb twats Thumbs Down

With this method I never have to get off the bike. Thumbs Up

Do they really still have petrol stations with attendants in the UK? I must have used them on my visits without paying any attention, a rare sight over here, almost all are unmanned automats (as in the pic above)

I beg to differ, I can kick that machine pretty well from the bike Laughing

Although I have never personally used one with a screen like that on it, The pic was purely demonstration as it was the first I found

The jury is still out. I failed to detect any intelligence in my visit - perhaps they were robots after all? Mr. Green

Does the writing on the blue screen say "Take your helmet off?"

We have a "24 hour" pay at the pump station near us, but for some reason they close it on bank holidays. WTF is that about?

I imagine if you were attacked by someone with a hammer, wearing no helmet, you’d be bloody weary the next time you were around some stranger with a hammer. Or god forbid you get attacked again.
I have no trouble around Gloucestershire with a helmet on in a station, and they have had trouble in the past with people threatening staff, helmet or no helmet.
I think it’s fair, if you walk in and they ask you kindly to take it off, it’s no bother for me.

Perhaps they should have a 'please leave your hammer outside' sign on the door, then.

A teacher from my old school walked into a shop one day and killed the person behind the counter with a hammer. But I don't think she had a bike, and she'd be about 80 by now.

It's the mindless stupidity of it which gets me, something that the woman in the shop wasn't impressed with me pointing out...

Just accept that you live in a world where 90% of the people around you at any one moment are complete and utter morons. You'll find your expectations become much more realistic and a lot of stress is shed as a result.

I occasionally go to the Shell garage in Wickham even though it's further from me than most of the other petrol stations, normally because it's cheaper and you get free compressed air. They have these machines aswell but I suspect they don't accept visa electron as my card has never been accepted there and I always have to go in and talk to the retard attendant (the only thing he seems to be attending is a castle in the sky) who knows crisps by their colours rather than flavours!

All I can say is Walkers changing S&V to green must have fucked with his head.

what annoys me is the inconsistancy of it and moreso their attitudes.

its annoying but im not going to birch and moan when someone asks me to take my helmet off, i understand the reasons but some things do wind me up.

stopped at my 'other' local garage (there are 2 virtually opposite eachother owned by the same company), pulled up, gloves off, opened tank, stuck nossle in and waited.. machine didnt turn on. i looked at the machine, put the nossle back, tried again, nothing. so got off, walked round the machine to find the attendant waving his arms about and making 'remove helmet' gestures.

in 2 years of riding and filling up regularly here (albeit more the other garage than this one) i've never been asked and took exception to it so got back on the back, road 50 yards down the road and turned into my usual one.

i chat quite a lot to the guy in there so didnt foresee a problem. cue to pulling up, nossle out etc.. and then i hear over the speaker 'remove helmet please' i leant forward so he could see me and made a 'its me' gesture, but he repeated the request again. i took off my helmet made the 'its me' gesture again and his face lit up, waved hi etc.. and activated the pump.

when i went in i asked what all that was about as im always in here, he knows me, knows what my bike looks like so whats the problem all of a sudden.

apparently within the last week they'd had 2 bikers pull in, fill up and bugger off without paying. they'd also got it in the neck as when the police turned up to look at the cctv all they saw were 2 guys with helmets on, no way to identify them (no. plates were fakes) so he said they've had to change policy and are asking all bikers to remove their helmets.

he apologied and said he knows its a pain but theres nothing he can do.

like i said before, it is a pain, but i understand the reasonings..

a week later i pull in, gloves off, nossle in, pump activates, fill up and go and pay.. all with my helmet on. Brick Wall

havent been asked to remove it since...
ah well...

Asking you to remove your helmet before FILLING is annoying but it makes sense for security purposes. (Although there's always the standard I bet they don't ask people to remove religious head coverings).
What retarded is you fill up with fuel, you walk in the shop, and then before they let you pay they ask you to remove your helmet. If your going to rob them then you won't do it. If your going to steal the fuel then your not coming in the shop...

Only one reasonable argument I can forsee is that they don't want to open the till with helmet wearers around. But if the thief is going to force you to hand over the cash they can force you to open the till....
