It must be one of the most counter-intuitive things imaginable and I'm sure over-thinking it will make your cornering worse, rather than better. To be honest, you can't avoid doing it if you're leaning the bike into a corner. If you weren't counter-steering you'd be picking yourself up off the tarmac at every bend.
I'm sure some knee-downers will be along soon to advise you about body positioning, etc. but my advice is to relax and trust the bike more. |
Have to second this mate. I'm reletively new to this myself, and just taking my DAS and Mod2 next month. Initially going into corners, especially roundabouts, I'd falter half way round as I began to think about what I was doing, and end up swan-necking my way around...
The sooner you clear your mind about actually "turning", the better. During my Mod1, I just kept saying to myself - "don't think about it, just do it".
One tip for counter-steering I found useful, and one the experienced riders here will reitterate a lot - "look where you want to go". It really helps peering forward into the route you wish to take around the corner - don't look down at the few feet ahead of your bike. Look as far forward as possible when progressing through the turn.
One other thing I found amazingly useful. See if your instructor can take you pillion on the back of his bike for 20 minutes. I had to the other week when riding to the test centre due to lack of machines at the riding school, and it was really useful seeing how the instructor confidently leaned the bike into the corners. You'd be amazed how far over they go without it actually being a sharp angle. If you're struggeling to lean the bike over this could hinder your progress around the corner... ____________________ Lincoln, England

I have had the pegs grinding while cornering on the bandit
Make sure the tyres are warmed up properly and they are correctly inflated. Then go have some fun
Another option is to get some advanced training. ____________________ Suzuki GSF600 K3 (in the fastest colour, black). |
