Anyone done something similar?
Any tips (all welcome)?
I've been over to Europe a few times and I've had the Wife in training for a year
There will be a full run down when I get back and have time.
Cheers.

For the Luxembourg section you must ride from Vianden to Clerveaux... one of the great "secret" european biking roads ____________________ Gaffer Tape is like The Force.

You seem to have it planned out like a military excersize.
I go touring every year, and usually do about 3,000 miles in two weeks.
The thing is, we never plan it.
We normally get the maps out when we get to Calais and decide where to go based on the latest weather forecast.
France is great because out of town, it's always easy to get bedded down.
There are two national chains I find very good.
Formule one, and B&B.
About 28 euro's a night.
Start thinking about it before 5pm though, as they do start filling up with fellow travellers after then.
Do remember to make sure you have European breakdown cover.
I was soooooo glad of it when my poxy Datatool alarm stranded me deep in the French alps last year.
The nearest garage was 50 miles away, which would have ended the trip in terms of cost if I'd had to pay for it.
The major problem is going to be the exchange rate.
I was horrified at how expensive Europe has become thanks to the pound being worth shit all.
It always used to be a cheap destination, but not so now.
Last year, I was paying avarage £1.50 a litre for fuel.
I think it's worse now.
The attitude of our European cousins towards bikes is much better than here, but in the case of the Germans especially, don't get in their way if they want to go faster than you, because they will let you know they are behind you in no uncertain terms, by driving up your chuff.
French and German auto routes are mostly two lanes, which means you need to be getting back in after overtaking pretty sharpish if they're busy.
Lastly, don't think that because you have a British number plate, you're going to be immune to the speed limits.
The Europeans seem to have far more Police activity on the roads than here, and the French police in particular, are very keen on setting up speed traps, usually in villages.
They can impose an on the spot fine and if you can't pay it, you're bike will be confiscated until you can.
That said, french motorists are very good when it comes to warning you of these traps.
If they're flashing their headlamps at you, that means the Gendarmarie are up ahead waiting. |

Hey Bill - we did something similar in a car about 3 years ago
around the same time of the year and didn't plan a thing.
Worked out real well !! Had no probs finding somewhere to stay- we still haven't booked anywhere for this trip!
I've known guys who have been given speeding tickets on the motorway
in France when they got to the next toll booth!! they calculated the average and gave them an on the spot fine!
The Italians are the worst - they literally jump out from behind parked cars (looking like something out of the Sweeny) with their speed guns!! Fookers!
This trip works out just under 2K miles but I'm expecting around 2.5K at least with detours and days out so I'm guessing at around £300/£350 on fuel....
Know what you mean about the curtesy to bikes over there!
I've found myself riding for around half a mile one handed before as I thanked everyone who gave me room to overtake.. It was like
Moses and the red sea!
Cheers
Edit - forgot to say that I have the breakdown cover already!!
It even offers a Hire vehicle and accomadation if required! - all for £35 - Bargain! ____________________ The safest place for ships is in a dock - but thats not what they were made for.
