It's running and booting up ok, but the screen is so dark you can only see it with a torch and the room light turned off?

Guessing this is a very specific problem, anyone offer any advice?

i'd bet that the backlight for the lcd has blown. not sure how easy it would be to swap out without swapping the lcd too.

As others have said the backlight has failed, typically it will be caused by the inverter that powers the backlighting, these are usually fairly cheap to replace, but can be a bit of a pain to install.

(Not a recommendation, just the first one that google threw up when I searched for it.)

And note that if you just buy a screen, often it won't come with the backlight.

A new screen wont fix this, and as said it is most likely just the inverter that you need. (a tenner on ebay)

Pretty easy to fit, can do it in about 10 minutes if you are in a hurry. Remove screen bezel and unplug old inverter.
